pekingduck
G'day peoples my Questions for the day. How hard do barra go compared to a jewie of equal size? I was telling a non fishing mate about a jewie I got over the weekend. He had never seen one before so I said it looked similar to a barra, but is there any real relation ? Also in all the fishing mags you see these massive barra caught on small baitcasters where myself and most people I know use larger 6500+ size reels..leads me to believe Jewies must run harder..any thoughts ? Ken A
I reckon Jews go harder than Barramundi by a fair margin. I don't rate either species as decent fighters myself but that's just my opinion. My mate who is a guide in Carins reckons Barramundi are one of the few species around that you can comfortably knock over a 50 pounder on a $50 outfit. I know plenty of people rate both species as great sportfish but they are not in the same league as some of the pelagics.
Lightweight
Barra are better eating fish. Never caught one so can't comment on that side. Jewies on the other hand can be tough to stop on lighter gear, but like all fish i am sure anyone can haul one in on a broomstick and wipper-snipper cord. Gibbofisho
jewies, i think barra are also a fair bit more plentifull (in their habitat) where as half the challenge of a jew is actually finding one. Plus i prefer the taste of jew to barra, but then again i eat raw bonito.

Caught a 5-6kg eastuary cod over the weekend while fishing for jews, which i reakon would pull both backwards! dan
stevefish
was once fishing near the top of the ord river near kunnunurra. a euro tourist came to our camp one evening saying how he couldnt wait to catch and eat a barra. we didnt have the heart to say we threw one in the river the previous night and went to bed hungry coz it tasted like mud barra taste like the water they come from, fresh muddy ones taste crap but clean salt ones are GOOD. my best barra was 95cm and fat as hell but not too much trouble on a trolled lure in a shallowish creek on 14 pound gear. barra are only a challenge to hooks really. if your lures are upgraded in the terminal department you wont lose many. that said they are still a challenge and good fun and very satisfying. but a rat king will give you more nervous moments and is more chance of dusting ya at any time than either a jew or barra of double the size. MarlinMadness
It is like comparing "well you know"! I have caught Black Jewfish in the Gulf of Carpentaria and Barras on the same day and give me a barra anyday. Jewfish do pull well but when you get a nice big "Saltwater" barra and they go deep and come up and do a big headshake, that is something else.
