gio
Hi Guys Im in the market for a new spinning reel and yesterday in a certain department store i seen the following reels on special, and thought they represented good value for money. Daiwa samurai 3i 2500 $45 Penn captiva cv2000 $55 I want something that can do a bit everything including tossing soft plastics and the occasional hardbody, do you think either of these reels are up to the task and if so which one will do a better job of it? Reel will eventually be matched up to a 6-7" 2-5kg 2 piece rod. Your thoughts are much appreciated Cheers
Blood Knot
Gio Dont know much about the Penn Captiva but have 3 Penn reels and they have given great service. Beware the Samurai they have spool corrosion problems amongst other things. John

gio
Shimano Sienna? What about them sammy? Are they any good? I didnt really want to spend more than a $
Sammy0884
Whoa! $100 will get you a great reel...Shimano havw a number in that price range..all with 10 year warranties the pick would be a Sedona FB, that will give you change from $100, i think they are about $90 or so, a sienna retails for $70 best bet is to get somebody in the know to take you into a shop (so they don't BS you) and see what you like for the price
netic
mate buy an Aernos, great eggbeater, use it for dollies, under $100 bucks. As stated earlier, anything Shimano will be good

namesay
Even the cheap shimanos have 10 year warranties! You should get a great reel for around $100.
gio
So the general consensus is to steer clear of the lower range of penn and daiwa and go for something in shimano in the $100 range? BTW would like to get it spooled with 6lb fireline for the money aswell so $100 including line. Cheers

cap3
From my experiences, my opinion is that you cant beat the value of a Daiwa Laguna in that price range. Alloy body, spare alloy spool, 7 bearings and a better drag system than some its higher spec Shimano's. You can pick one up for $99 at the moment. Why???? Apart from the Shimano Baitrunners which are legendary reels (and I have the whole set of ) Daiwa spinning reels have got it all over the Shimano's in every aspect except for maybe the 10 year warranty offered by Shimano. Than again, i've never had a warranty problem with the Daiwa's anyway.

kenmare
Hi Gio, Having decided the type of fishing YOU intend to do and how much you're prepared to spend, all you need to do now is spend a little time browsing around the tackle shops. Don't worry too much about brands or models: pretty well all of the major brand reels will do the job well. Instead, just find a reel that YOU like the look and feel of, that will match-up well with your rod. Then buy it. Regards, Bob Edited May 25, 2006 by kenmare
Grantm
Heres my prediction for you. Youll get a hundred dollar reel and think geez hope i havent gone overboard. Then after a while the reel is still ok but getting a bit rough and you think well maybe a hundred was too much but im happy with it. Then it gets a bit rougher. hmmm maybe an upgrade is in order............................................................................................................................ cut a long story short youll eventually post a question as to whether you go a Stella or Certate !! Dont worry we have all done it ! You too will become a tackle junky and suddenly 2 weeks wages is not too much too spend on fishing.. Good luck .... Oh thats a thought, i still have an Okuma Avenga i got for free with a mag subscription. Worth about 75 bucks and has a fantastic drag. Good smooth little reel. worth a look. gio
Well after much deliberation i decided to spend the day looking for a new bream combo. With my mate mickysacca as a 2nd opinion with visited 2 major tackle stores in our area and then made the trip to our site sponsors ABA. May i say the extra drive was well worth it the prices and service provided by Mick at ABA were much better then anything else i had seen prior. Jig em rigs were half the price of the other place and after the fishraider discount Berkley Gulps wer $4 a bag cheaper. But what i really appreciated was the service, I was made to feel like a moron at the 2 other stores where i experienced everything from patronised to being pushed into looking at higher end gear. Thanks Mick for your no bullshit approach and for the good deal on the new setup. Ended up going for Pflueger Trion 7'0" High Modulus Graphite 2-5kg Shimano Sienna 2500 Thanks to all those raiders who added there 2 cents to the thread to help me come to my decision Cheers
