G'day Fishraiders

I thought I would share something I just cooked up. The finger notch I was woking on is messy and doesnt give a smooth finish. I just designed this in publisher. I would like to offer it on all my spin rods if desired. Should let you touch the blank from any direction and I think it looks more flash. Feel free to submit your opinion or to shoot it down (your reasons would be helpfull). I had been thinking about a nice solution and came up with this. I havent seen any other builder use this anywhere and I think its original. If anyone can show this published anywhere else on a past date I will remove my claim. Your input is much appreciated

Fore grip.

I assume your doing this as a sensitivity thing. Given that your reel hand will prolly never extend past the fixed hood ( if indeed fixed hood up is best setup to start with ) I cant see any great advantage. Even when retrieving your index finger will most likely be lateral to the rod ( to impart an action to the lure)and thus a "split" will prolly be uncomfortable. You would prolly be better off turning it around having fixed hood down and a notch for your little finger at the back of the seat if sensitivity is the aim. Also even small eva hosels will add weight over cork as will the extra glue needed to securely hold the seat. appearance wise it will look odd and not immediately relevant also

Id be interested in hearing your differing opinions but on the face of it thats the way I see it.

Not so in this case Allen ,I was talking with Outdoordan yesterday and that is exactly how he holds his rod with one finger extended along the blank :tease: .I dont do it that way personally but some do :tease:

Rohit ,you know my stance on all this fancy stuff as we have talked about it fairly regularly :biggrin2: .

I like a no nonsense rod that will kick ass on the line class I am using and if it looks asthecally good well so be it ....

I really want one of those pelagics to test in the build we discussed as its time to pay some of those bigger jews back for recent dust offs :074:

Allen

1) Thanks for your observations

2) Its the forgrip

3) The guys I am offering this to are the ones who prefer uplocking

4) I made this up after discussing this with some serious fishos in my workshop. They showed me the way they hold and they wanted a nice way to touch the blank. This is where their finger goes. I am showing I can do this to any one else who is interested and to get varied opinion on how it will suit fishing

5) Extra weight on the tip area of the blank will affect it but hosels dont go on the tip. They will take place of the cork which would have been there anyway and there is a significant chunk missing from the foregrip because of the split, should get some weight savings back. the overall rod weight might become heavier but by mabe 2 grams total. Is that so heavy for a fisho. My techniques also result in significant weight savings in other ways aswell.

6) The blanks I use are quite fast tapered which means a fatter butt and less space between seat and blank. On light stuff I use graphite arbors which means less epoxy is required for filling

7) You forgeting the most important rule in custom rods. NOTHING is written in stone. Thats what we are about. This originaly came about from a request from a customer to be able to touch the blank and still have a foregrip. He held the butt temp assembled with the reel on and we took into account where his finger ends up. If a client knows that this is avialable as an option he might want to use it and end up with something he is very happy with.

8) Have a look a some of my other posts and you will see the pelagic L with a notch ground into the thread end and the seat in downlocking. DONE IT ALREADY and if any one wants it I can do it. I work with the customer and explain/demonstrate all different things I can do let let them choose what they want to go with

Ah ha!

The nail gets hit on the head - give the client what he wants - that's why , when I saw the mahi mahi I bought it - then after meeting the man, and fighting myself way past his kitchen... we created a Haraka Mahi Mahi light -

I was completely taken by the dedication of this builder.. I have a one off master piece - with little crap on it like this rod was made by ***** or KR / RL - it's got sweet nothing on it - that's how I like my rods- it's clean and pure ( no cork guys so no issue( he has failed to convert me ) ) .... people who use it love it. I'm in sales and I can say it's nice to be able to trust you're not getting shafted (I've met a few of them who bought game rods ) and getting the best available - I make no excusses for promoting the best - service and attitude.... ( especially since hes a sponsor now ) that's no secret as some of you had the odd PM beforehand .... to help prevent you buying another dud.

I think it's time for a wee

Tight lines Raiders.

Lance you are one of natures gentleman thats for sure and I cant wait to meet up with you :tease: and your way with words astounds me

Hi Rohit,

Just a suggestion, but have you ever thought of doing a rod without any foregrip? I have a couple of Kistler rods that have no foregrip, and another custom rod that has a very small 1" foregrip, and I can leave my index finger on the blank itself with those rods. Whether it be a rod with or without a foregrip, I fish with my index finger pointing up the rod, resting on the side of the grip/blank, as described in a post above. From an aesthetic viewpoint, I reckon rods with no foregrips look damn cool, check out these examples:

Daiwa baitcasters:

or the Kistlers:

Hi Ben

I do do the rods without the foregrips when asked to do it that way. Same with the really short foregrips. It all comes back to what the client finds good. I can also remove or modify the forgrips on any of the shelf rods if a client comes with the request
