Hi guys,

I am putting this post up to gain some information on rod building. I am wishing to build myself a dedicated kingie crusher and would like to know where to start. Ie geting the blank to start with and where i can purchase some fuji guides etc.

If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated.

thankyou.

I recntly got some stuff (guides, cork grips etc) from "mudhole.com", it's a store in the US, and shipping is a rip off, but I'm sure some other guys will be able to tell you some local suppliers.

As for blanks, if you're after 1 piece, you really have no choice but to get it from a local supplier. What type of blank do you wanna get?

Not sure as for what blank i want, im after a one piece preferably of around 20-30kgs. i want the normal guides not the rollers (not a big fan of the rollers).

thanks for the help mate.

Mate I do parts and custom rods. I have just the type of blanks you are after from 5'6" to 7'. The various models cover 20lb to 130lb and are one pce. Rollers are a good idea for line burners but not required for drag em out style species like kings. I also have had a line of guides custom made for me which would have to be the stongest fixed frames available, I use them on rods upto 130lb. I can supply all the bits like machined seats and gimbals.

Those who make their own rods are becoming an endangered species!!! Getting stuff for rod building is getting tougher all the time. If you want some ideas on rod receipes have a look at the Fuji site-www.fujitackle.com.au. It is in the "education" section. Ian Miller puts a few rod building receipes on there which are worth looking at. Most tackle stores will be able to get the components in for you if you order it.

But off the shelf rods are very good these days. I recently bought a couple of Shimano T curve bluewater rods in 24 kg class. They have fixed Sic guides and don't have that almost radical taper that you see in most rods today.

The slower taper with the graphite shaft means you have power straight from the tip-almost from the word go rather than the top half of the rod just being an extension of your fishing line. It subdues kingies in seconds...very impressed. I got a kingie over 10.5kg a week ago on this rod.Works like a charm.

My last rod I built was a loomis baitcaster for my wife. Just finished it a month ago. Took 4 weeks to get the blank!!! If I were you I would have a good look at what Saqa has. It may save you a lot of waiting and hassles. You better be quick with this rod as there are some real monster kingies around. Saw a few genuine 20Kg+ kingies around Pittwater. You can verify it with Peter Le Blang as he has seen them too.

Cheers

Kelvin

just got mine on friday  absolute BEAST, no king would survive...

enough guts to rip em out of any structure yet the tip is soft enough that they wont feel the pressure when they pick up the bait. and it looks KICKASS!

Jewel knows which one im talking about i think

(report on rod to come when i give it a good thumping hopefully next weekend)

CFD

Good luck on the testing day CFD, hope you hook a big one!
