Pittwater is slowly becoming a marine desert. There are pros everywhere!!! There are traps both marked and unmarked all over the place. Beach haulers are always present in the mornings working the western shore. Around Easter you couldn't see lion island from all the pro boats which were around!

Cheers

Whats happening in Pittwater is a crime. It is and has been ravaged by pro's and what used to be a great place is now a marine disaster. All the while adding fodder to the Marine park debate where marine park opponents are claiming fish stocks are not under threat. This may be so overall but Pittwater is stuffed and needs immediate rectification. The useless pros have dug their own grave in my opinion and with the amount of fish taken lately will surley see the numbers drop. The Calerpa Weed is also a big problem.

Pittwater would be a great location for a recreational fishing haven. From West Head to Barrenjoey all the way in. How good would that be ! It would also bring back the fish and support the claims fish stocks are not under any threat.

I just dont bother fishing it these days, its a waste of time.

Ive had a few seshions over the past month, still catching 3-4 quality bream and whiting with the odd flatty a seshion, all fish have been caught in 5-10ft of water close to shore near weed beds using live nippers..damn pinkies are a pest though..

Not one bit of surface action seen

How much is taken ?

Where do you get the info as I would be very interested.

Dont have the exact numbers Haraka i am just suggesting numbers have dropped based on the reports from around the traps. I have heard stories that suggest local pro's used to take up to 40 boxes of fish per day when Pittwater was firing years ago, and that is perhaps part of the problem.

The local pro's have been crying for ages about the lack of fish they now take, and this has been reported in local newspapers and even on TV. Some local pro's have pulled the pin their after generations of fishing due to low stocks making their operation simply non profitable. These blokes reporting only a few boxes taken if that.

Add to this the Harbour pro's who have now moved in, you dont have to have a degree in marine biology to realise they cant be taking too many fish.

Reports from blokes like Pete Deblang who runs charters their also will testify to the slowing up. Not to mention every fishing report you read tells of the poor result from this waterway. Add to all that a weed infestation more than likely spread by the countless amount of dragg and haul netting by pro's over the years and you have got yourself a major problem. A marine park is not the answer either. All that is needed is a more efficient and proactive govenment, and proper management from the fisheries in this area to sort it all out. An RFH for starters !

Anyone who thinks Pittwater offers good fishing now needs to speak to some of the fishos who fished it 20 years ago. I would say Ken could tell some stories of this place !

'pros' as in commerical yeah??

damn, sounds in a bad way. I hope something is done about it. Maybe everyone should email bob debus.

Mate a lot has been done, Pete le blang has been hammering fisheries doors down but to no avail, He was trying to use the weed as a way of restricting the pro's but had no luck.

Here is a update from Petes website.

received an email from the DPI last week about the Caulerpa Weed in Pittwater.

The email has basically stated that the spread of the weed is now too large to do anything about. They are not looking at restricting the areas of commercial operations any further. Their reasoning is that recreational boaters, wave and wind action spread the weed just as much as the commercial operators do.

I say that if you remove the commercial operators from the river then you have removed half the problem.

They also need to make Pittwater a no anchor area where the weed is and along the shallow areas, REMOVE THE BLOODY STUFF. Once the Caulerpa Weed has been removed from the areas that the beach haulers use, then let them back. Two new outbreaks have been reported in The Brisbane Waters so I suggest that if you fish on the Central Coast then call fisheries and pressure them into removing it immediately.

South Australia has similar problems as us but they jumped on the drama quickly and have got on top of the situation.

They used a vacuum system to remove it and have a plan in place that forces them to go back and check for new outbreaks.

Hopefully the next report will have better news on the Caulerpa front.

REMOVE THE BLOODY STUFF.

They used a vacuum system to remove it and have a plan in place that forces them to go back and check for new outbreaks.

I'd just like to note that, due to the nature of Caulerpa taxifolia, it's BLOODY HARD to "REMOVE THE BLOODY STUFF". A single "leaf" can regenerate an entire plant, and Caulerpa can survive for up to a month out of water.

Flattieman.

I really hate Pittwater at the moment. It hurts me to say it to. As a place that i grew up fishing for so many years it's gone from awsome to awfull.

The pros have obliterated the place.

At least in a few years we won't have to worry about the pros any more, cause there won't be any fish to catch either.

just thinking about this, my guess is the pro's dont fish the entire Hawkesbury system. I often see them in that part from Juno to Lion island but do they go out into Broken Bay, do they go up the river? If so how far? Maybe the go is to avoid the lower part and either go into the Bay or up the river past the bridges. Does anyone know the limits of their travels for fishing?

Pittwater's buggered. :1badmood:

See my post in Fisheries New & Politics http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/inde...showtopic=11871

The main point of the community forum is to address the noxious weed Caulerpa Taxifolia, but there are guys from fisheries who will be there. We need a high presence at this forum to show that we care about Pittwater, so follow the link above, read about it and book in.

Let's make some noise and let's try and get some action. I for one don't want to be telling my grandchildren that there used to be great fishing, fairy penguins, sea eagles and a whole ecosystem in Pittwater that I allowed to be destroyed because I sat on my arse.

Sorry about the rant, I feel very strongly about this.

You do need to book in, but it costs nothing, the number and info can all be accessed via the link above.

Cheers,

Neilm
