covanova
I've been doing some research and I've seen the Wollondilly near wombeyan caves is supposed to be an all-year round spot for trout, and quite a good one given the surge of fish coming up from the dam. Has anyone had any experience there? I went up to Orange a couple of weeks ago, and saw Ophir, with a small, very clear running creek running through it. Not much flow, but it is a general trout water and locals say there's fish in it...anyone heard?
wolfgang
Hello Casanova, I used to fish alot of the central west for trout up until I moved North. There are trout at Ophir as well as the Bell's river nearby. There is a fair bit of fishing pressure there as well. Unfortunately you'd often see people fishing out of season regardless of the numerous signs erected. There are local acclimatisation groups who often undertook restockings yet with the continual severe droughts since the 90's there wouldn't have been much natural spawning taking place. Ophir has a lot of goldfield history to it so you might want to take a gold pan as well as you can always pan up a bit of colour. There used to be some awesome trout creeks on the Southern Canobalas side of Orange but I think they have been swallowed up by the massive Cadia and Newcrest goldmines there. Sir Battler
Havent fished at Ophir but have done some around Carcoar on the Belubula with some success. Mostly spring fed with some water from the dam so is usually running. Not overly large fish but usually there in numbers.
covanova
Thanks! The flow at ophir was pretty good, some locals tell be because of the poo factory outlet not far upstream.... I thought the water was clear! I'll have to get into it in november. In the mean time, I'll learn how to fly cast!
wrasseman
I've been up the Wonbeyan caves area in summer and saw no signs of trout despite a few good searches however I'm sure that in winter there is potential as the same can be said of the lower cox and kowmung rivers and they fish very well in winter (if its still legal). cheers Col. Jewhunter
G'day. I've fished the Wollondilly a fair bit. The Wollondilly river station is a nice place to camp with spots right on the river. The fish are there but they get hammered. In saying that if you put in the effort you should be rewarded. My best rainbow from there went 51cms & I've seen bigger fish in there. It's tough this time of year when the Trout are rubbing bellies & are interested in things other than eating! Plenty to do there apart from fishing. Take a trip to the caves & drive around the area looking for Trout streams. There are some nice little spots on the Abercrombie to fish & the streams around Taralga fish well if they have enough water when the season opens. Hope this helps. Cheers.
