Bought A Boat

Hi, I just bought a 9ft fibreglass punt style boat.

I was wondering what you could recommend for the motor. I'm thinking somewhere between 10-15 hp (previous owner had a 15merc on it ). I don't know whether to buy a second hand motor or just go new. From my ebay browsing second hand motors seem barely cheaper and I'm not mechanical at all. They definately don't depreciate as fast as boats do they.

Anyway, what advice can you offer on brands, reliability, hp, 2stroke vs 4stroke, value for money etc.

The 15hp merc is cheaper then the 10hp merc. Does anyone else find this strange?

Thanks for any suggestions/advice

My opinion Barry, buy a new motor, many people I have known have bought second hand and had issues and for someone that is not mechanical it can equate to a long row home. As for the motor size I would have thought that a 15 may be overkill but without knowing the boats weight its a little hard to say. The pricing would come down to production numbers as most manufacturers would sell ten 15hp's to about one 10hp. Quality these days is much of a muchness really allthough there are some "unknown quantities " on ebay.
