swansea_fisho Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Gday All, Tommorrow i'm taking a first timer out for a bottom bash. He's a new timer to offshore fishing . He's pretty keen on picking up a well priced combo even though I've offered to let him use one of my 35 odd combos . Anyways any advice on a decent combo for under $200, I recommended a Penn Gti30 combo for $175 but any other suggestions would be appreciated Thanks All Steve
Guest IFishSick. Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I don't use the cheap combo's because I like to feel secure and be able to trust my tackle. I use a Shimano Charter Special reel with 50lb braid and a fully rollered Shimano Backbone Series rod 15kg.

Cheers mate, Im pretty sure his budget is $200 but thanks anyways and 50lb braid on a charter special sheeez lol Steve
Tim Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Those penn combo's seem like pretty good value to me. I've been on a bottom bashing charter before and that was the gear they used. The charter operator said he'd had them all for over a year and they all seemed to be going fine. I think a rollered 15kg rod is overkill for bottom bashing, but each to his own. I'd be looking for 6-8kg no rollers.
swansea_fisho Posted October 5, 2006 Author Posted October 5, 2006 cheers mate, My mate swears by them. Thats all he uses for bottom bashing on his boat Steve
Bashir Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I've owned a few penn gti reels, they are probably one of the best star drag level winds on the market for the money... been around a long time, great reels.
FletcherG1991 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 (edited) go the Gti.....not sure what the rod is but i like the Gti's and found there very nice to use when i used them Edited October 5, 2006 by FletcherG1991
Guest Big-Banana Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Iam thinking for my next bottom bashing outfit and light trolling a TLD 15 with a 10kg rod. Doesnt anyone rate the Charter Specials?
Bashir Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 The charter specials are ok, but there isn't much else on the market in the same area worth buying (ie pfleugeurs and okumas - yuk), maybe the penn 320ld. I don't rate the tld15 I have had one and its drag range was not up to scratch, I like the daiwa ld50h. Didn't know the charter specials could be had for 180 with a rod, that's real good buying.
netic Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 MY first ever boat rod was a Penn gti330, still kicking today, great reel for the money
domza Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 i hope to be giving my charter special a good work out this weekend. Brand new with 30lb fins Hopefully i don't have any trouble with it
Sammy0884 Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 (edited) Shimano Charter specail or a Tekota 600 are great bottom bashing reels that are trolling friendly. The Charter special is probably a better option if you are planning to troll alot because of its lever drag, it is also cheaper. Edited November 6, 2006 by coollamon
Guest Big-Banana Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 I love the look of the charter specials, and they're cheap! With a 10 year warranty you cant go wrong either. I love my Pen 330GTI Although Id like a lever drag for a bottom bashing reel and its more multi purpose.
