Stella Or Dogfight

Hi All

We after way too much thinking time, I am going to replace my overhead jigger with a top end spin, to add some versitility to what I can do with it.

I can get a Stella 10000 or 6500 Saltiga Expidtion for around the same money.

Having never looked @ reels in this class, who would go what and why?

Jon

Hi John,

at that level it is really which one tickles your fancy... People here will argue Shimano vs. Daiwa until they are blue in the face but the bottom line is that they are both about as good as they get for threadline reels...

Go and have a look, play, feel etc.... talking RRP's, the shimano is about $400 cheaper than the daiwa, which might make a difference in the end... the shimano is the epitome of style and class, the daiwa is a balls to the wall tough reel...pick which one you like and take it home...

I got a stella 20000. This is one really SENSATIONAL piece of gear. You only need to catch one fish on it to know. I also LOVE the saltiga series from Daiwa. Have used it in the past but as sammy noted the shimano is significantly cheaper.

Team Daiwa dealers are not allowed to discount the saltiga range otherwise they lose their franchise to team daiwa. Shimano however have no such scheme. Either way they are top of the class. After fishing with these reels..all other reels feel like they are made from spaghetti.

SHop around with the shimano as you'll score a good price. Now days ALL my reels are shimano or daiwa. They are bit like Holden and ford.... tit for tat theyare on equal terms. CHeers KElvin

Go the Shimano Stella!

-cheaper

-smoother reel

-smoother drag

-10 year warranty

-can be used out of the box "as is"

Daiwa is a good option

-meant to be tougher and waterproof/washable

-more expensive

-not as smooth

-lower maximum drag capacity

-warranty only 2 years

-recommended to have pre-service (especially the drag system) prior to using the reel on big fish.

hope this helps.

Ciao.

i played around with a stella 20000 on thursday and the are fantastic reels ..... so smooth but can push so much drag.

i have also played around with alot of other daiwa top of the range gear on thursday and friday and i must say that daiwa is really going ahead in leaps and bounds.

now to go the stella or saltiga ?

personally (now i am a fan of shimano but since getting a job in a tackle shop i am starting to see that there is alot of nice gear from other brands) i would be having a good look at the daiwa ..... you get what you pay for and in this situation thats a good thing :mfr_lol:

the stella is also one of the nicest spining rells available so it all comes down to you

take your rod in have a play with them and see what you like

if you walk out of the shop and know thats what you really wanted then you won't be dissapointed

Both class bits of gear, the Daiwa is tougher than the Shimano but not as smooth.

Unless you are going to be giving the reel a VERY hard time on GTs and other tropical tractors the strength

difference is not really going to be an issue.......... I doubt that there would even be a fish around Sydney that would concern either reel.

I spent ages investigating both options before deciding......Saltiga drag does not give anything away to the stella. Maybe not as smooth at top end when kicking off, but still can put out 20kg+ drag pressure..more than most people can handle. Both reels are great , with subtle differences. 5 year warranty - not 2. Have a look at the internals and you see that one has it slightly over the other. ...Lots of posts on other forums too worth digging for. Either way, both reels can handle virtually anything you can throw at them.

Mate both reels are great

Im probably one of the biggest Shimano fans around but when it comes to these 2 reels i think Daiwa definately have the edge on Shimano.

But as mentioned previously it is more expensive ( unless you buy online)

I love the Sphere handle on the Daiwa and they feel stronger but as said maybe not as smooth as the stella, but both of them will do the job and i don't think either will let you down.

I found the sphere handle of the daiwa accumulated a LOT of crap when bait fishing and downrigging. Squid slime, fish blood, berly bits etc found their way into the holes...YUKKY. Chose the shimano mostly because of this reason. BUT BOTH GREAT reels. These 2 reels have pushed the boundaries of what a spinning reel can achieve.

I think from memory the daiwa has stainless steel gears...these aren't as smooth as the alloy gears in the shimano. There is a chance the shimano gears aren't as strong but I have yet to find a fish ANYWHERE to challenge the stella. Cheers kelvin

The internal gears of the daiwa are a stronger metal than the stella. In reality, you really have to push the limits of these reels to find such a weakness. Given the prices of the reel, wouldnt be using bait with them(exception being switch baiting or spinning gars at kings). I only use it for jigging or luring.....
