Guest johblow
Well, the boat was still hooked up to the car from Thursday's adventures, so i thought it would be a good idea to head out for a bit of a fish late today. Hit the water about 5pm at ATB, and headed around to Bobbo for a bit of a drift there, past Halvorsens, where i have caught flathead from the shore. Its a beautiful part of the river around there, but not many big fish... A mate boated a keeper whiting, and that was about it, apart from smaller whiting and even smaller bream and reddies. So we headed off back past ATB toward Waratah, and we ended up near Waratah Bay, at what looked like a good spot. It was a good spot too. If it wasnt for lack of suitable bait we woulda got more. We had a bunch of frozen yabbies (leftovers from thursday) and two frozen yellowtail from a few weeks back. Well, the yabbies were going good, but were not staying on the hook long enough for the big guys to have a crack at em. So we cut up some yellowtail, and man did it go off or what! The bream were into it bigtime - partly because i think it was just staying on the hook better with the usual pickers about. Was rather deep, with no current, but we needed to use a decent amount of lead to get the bait down before the pickers could demolish it. Friends got busted off a couple of times, and i landed two nice bream, of about 30 cm or so. Geeeeze! Did they pull too. The first one (pictured) really gave me some, all the way in. It took the bait while my rod was still in the holder, and fair dinkum i though the rod was gonna buckle with the amount of bend in it. I really was wondering if i was gonna be able to get it out of the holder without snapping the rod. Also pulled in a few good reddies too, which was a surprise - normally catch tiny buggers. Anyhow they were not legal, but gave a great fight. But, then we ran out of bait... So, yeah, strips of yellow tail work really well. Thats my lesson for the day. And, my faith in the hawkesbury is full. I really believe that if you have good bait, good timing and a good spot, you can always do well. In other words, if you have good bait, and are willing to try a few spots, youll produce something OK :-)
