Another Which Rod Question?

My fiancee reckons i should get serious about fishing and she wants to buy me a shimano twin power 2500. But i would also need a rod to mate it up with. She thought i could use the ones i have but i reckon i should get something excellent to match it up with. What i have now are cheapies i bought when ***** had sales on them. I really have no idea how to pick a good rod from a dud rod. So i need your help ladies and gentlemen!

I mainly fish around Port Hacking and Georges River and i am land based. In some places i fish have submerged rock in front, would i need a long rod like 12 foot to overcome constant snagging?

I don't really have a target species as i've pretty much caught most types on my el cheapo combo. The largest fish i've ever caught was a 45cm salmon at lilli pilli. That was only once though. I guess the rod would be general purpose. Something that is light but strong enough to fight a salmon or a kingfish that many people has talked about

Hi MAte

I recently bought a 2500 twin power and it is a awesome little reel. I have mine on a custom made rod built by Rohit, from King rods, (site sponsor) It is a magic stick that I have fished Bream to kings on. The price for a custom rod will not b much more thana store bought of the rack and will b worth every cent.

Give Rohit a call and have a look at some of his light tackle gear well worht it.

hey mate, i personally like to have custom built rods, if i were u i would find a shop that sells rod blanks and go and put a bend in sum and see if u like the feel of them, u can get a rod that suits u quite well this way and can also work out cheap too depending on wat blank u go for and wat hardware or course, some schinder glas blanks are quite cheap and feel pretty good i have a MT 6144 that does pretty well for a genral purpose rod although im not familiar with the reel u have but i find it easy to balance outfits like this and get excatly wat u want.

A reel such as the one mentioned definately needs to be matched up to a graphite blank.

There are so many off the rack rods these days that custom built rods are superior for niche applications or experieced fishos who can tell the difference and justify the extra cost. BTW im not implying you are not experienced enuf or your fishing application is not a niche one. I am merely pointing out that there are a heap of good rods at very resonable prices that may save you a few bucks.

Some of these include the new Steve Starling range from Shimano for eg.....

  • 2 weeks later...

If your not looking at spending too much the Silstar Powertips are an excellent rod. I have a 5'6 version which has been used to about 5+ years with no problems. These are pretty durable. Graphite has better sensitivity but needs more care as they break if mishandled.

It all depends on how much you want to spend....and how serious you are.... and do you want a rod to last as long as your reel or to last a lifetime...

I have just bought a Pro-Series custom rod from Fishfinder Tony (site sponsor) and it mates well with everything from a 2500 to a 6500.... but you will have to buy your missus lots of dinners to tank her for letting you buy it....

A custom rod is something special and in this case Tony's rods are also custom made blanks....made specifically for fishfinder... so doubly special in my books.... and talk about a sweet action!!!!!

These will definately handle a huge range of fish including snapper and kingfish....

And they have a 10year warantee .....

Really worth giving him a call...

Cheers

Good to hear of another happy fishfinder custom rod, i have a 50lb kingy jig special which will be ready this week and a Snapper Master to come shortly after... then maybe an 80lb stump puller...its a little bit crazy but i am happy knowing that i will be totally satisfied having a rod built exactly the way i like it..

The twin power is a fantastic reel, and deserves to have a nice rod behind it, for something off the shelf to save some money i would highly recommend the Shimano T-curve tournament series which are around the $250 mark, there are Shimano raiders for less ($159) and T-Curve Flight series with titanium guides for a bit over the $400 mark, but for that money i would get Tony to make up one of his custom blanks for you, they are simply amazing rods that will take rediculous amouts of load, more than a twinpower would ever dream of dishing out....

Cheers

Sammy
