I have a riptide 55 Minn Kota bow mount and was wondering if there is a way to charge the battery that stands alone for it to be charged from the outboard when I am going from spot to spot or returning from a long drive down river ????

Thanks in advance .

Stewy, Happy New Year mate, if you give me a call I let you know how I did my secondary battery on the previous boat and then you can post it for others to see.

Yes you can do this depending on your outboard

Most outboards are running on a magneto system and usually have

A few auxiliary wires that are not being used (The manufactures do this

So they only have to produce 1 wire harness to suit many different applications.

E.g. Pull start, Electric start) however you MUST use a regulator as the Magneto will

Put our around 17 amps and most if not all 12 volt equipment is only designed to take around 14 amps

So if you don’t use a regulator you will blow up whatever you are trying to power.

Lift the cover off your outboard and look for unused wires. Then while the engine is running

Connect a test light to the wires to see weather they are live. Once you have established this

You can mount a regulator onto your boar and run the wires from the motor to the regulator.

Then from the regulator to whatever you wish to power. (Eg, sounder. lighter attachment, or a battery.

If you have any more questions contact fellow raider TUFFY (Russell) He has set up his boat to power a

6 Volt motorbike battery and other instruments.

Hopefully this helps

Deffinatly give TUFFY (Russ) A call he has a 40HP 4s Honda

He might be able to draw you a plan with a list of parts you will need.

Or take it to an auto electritian

Yes Stewy , it is indeed possible. Connect the 2 batteries in parrallel (+ to + ,- to -) and install a Voltage Sensor Relay in the +ve circuit. When the voltage from your outboards alternator exceeds 14V , the relay automatically applies charging current to both batteries.

Just remember whichever method you use to make certain that the kota battery CANNOT backfeed into the system that powers your sounder etc when the Kota is running, as the maximiser function of your Kota has a very high chance of cooking your electronics.
