Guest Big-Banana
Gday Fellas, As a few of you know, I fish out of a Seatamer 7m Plated Aluminum boat. I can't fault the boat apart from the fact that when theres a nasty following sea it tends to broach a little bit from side to side. I think this is due to the extra two batteries installed in the front underneath the floor for overnight trips. I reckon this means that the front of the hull is digging in when it should be out of the water (planing) even when the motor has been trimmed up all the way. Now me and the old man have been arguing over the best thing to do to eliminate the broaching. I suggested we move the two batteries from the front and put them in the kill tank. Theres probably 60kg there and that could fix the problem. He wants to also install a water tank out of aluminum for more weight. A tank with a few ribs welded in so the water won't slosh around. Now I think that this won't help at all. Water has no weight when on water right? The kill tank is around 150L and give or take the space required to fit batteries, 100L of water could fit in there. What do you guys think would be the best thing to do here? Hope you understand what I'm going on about!
Sammy0884
Hi Mate, Water definately does weigh on water! if you add 100L of water to the inside of your boat, be it in a tank or not, it will increase the displacement of your vessel by 100kg..... i found this out when my live tank pump filled my bilge with 300L, my boat was alot lower in the water
Robbielites
Hi, Sammy is right also salt water weighs a little over a kilo a litre where as fresh is bang on 1kg. A lot of cargo ships use water as ballast, have a read of this article about ballast in Wikipedia it may help you work out where to put it and its affects. Cheers. Robbie. tuffy
Hey, Banana, you running a wing on your motor? If not, the addition of a quality foil may solve your problem. I personally don't think that the weight of just 2 batteries on a 7mtr plate boat should make that much of a difference unless you have a shitload more other weight upfront. What does everybody else think? Tuffy
Guest Big-Banana
Hey, Banana, you running a wing on your motor? If not, the addition of a quality foil may solve your problem. What does everybody else think? Tuffy I was mate, then the thing cracked and since then we never replaced it as I honestly can't tell the difference in performance with or without it. I guess the weight will be better distributed when the batteries go to the middle/back more so than it is now. At the moment, we have to have a bloke sitting at the back in a bit of rough stuff which makes handling a lot more easier. It makes a huge difference in a following sea. So heres hoping that moving the weight back solves the problem. Thanks for the replies guys. Hopefully it works out Edited January 22, 2007 by Big-Banana
Sammy0884
Big-banana, after some thought, i think the best way to solve your problem is with a set of trim tabs, either fixed or adjustable...but they would correct your listing boat without sacrificing performance and wasting fuel by carrying dead weight

If this tank doesn't fix the problem or at least make a difference I don't think we will have any other choice. Thanks for your help matey
impulse
Just a question, does your fuel tank run front to back or side to side? Its probably front to back but is it isn't maybe the fuel is washing side to side in the following seas?
fishingrod
unless you have a shitload more other weight upfront. I think i saw him on the water Aust Day at West Head getting bait. Same name on the side, and same type of boat. Hes got an electirc anchor winch ...... and i saw at least 10-12 meters of 6mm chain go out. Im not sure how much more chain hes got hiding in there. Rod That was me mate, only got 6 m of chain up there, so thats not the problem. But the problem is solved. The tank has been installed, Ill post some pics later. But its a totally different boat when the batteries got taken out and the tank is full. Thanks for all you opinions and advice! Guest Big-Banana
The Kill Tank, with the inlet hose going into. The Tank fitted within, the extra two batteries are now in the middle with the deckwash running water into the tank. It can fit around 100L of water.
