Boat Insurance

With the new girl not to far away now (end of the month :icon_peace:) its time to start thinking about insurance.

So fellas who are you insured with and why? Have you had any claims? How did they go?

I am assuming this is one of those cases where cheaper is not always best. :1prop:

Thanks in advance

Jethro, I insured Sniffin with Club Marine after doing the ring around.

They were slightly more expensive than NRMA but knew the answers to all my questions regarding engine o/heats due to picking up a plastic bag and theft related problems.

They knew what a Minn-Kota and GPS map plotter were too, unlike NRMA

I haven't needed to make a claim 'touch wood'.

Cheers

Jethro,

Im with NRMA and like Bill has said they dont know one end of a boat from another. In saying that my last outboard seized and they paid for it (long story) In addition I recently have moved my boat from gaarge to road and when I called them re amending insurance they told me the following:

1. All contents i.e. radio, safety gear, GPS, fishfinder etc are covered in the value of the hull. There is no necessity to take them out of the boat when storing it

2. There is no increase in premium (depite the obvious increase in risk!)

3. There is no necessity for any security measures. You can leave your boat on the road with no locks, clamps, chains etc and if its taken they will pay the full insured value. Now you'd be pretty stupid to leave a boat unsecured on a road but there ya go!

I pressed the NRMA guy on all these points particularly point 3 and got him to confirm in writing.

Bottom line is they seem to have their heads firmly up their arses and my advice would be to go with Club Marine!! I'll definitley be changing over to them when my premium runs out...

By the way what type of boat are you going for'?

Cheers

Mark

I'm with NRMA and more then happy with them, I've been through the plastic bag on intake motor explode scenario and they were great. I was able to talk to the assessor through the whole process and he was great. He is not an nrma employee but is contracted by them to look at boats, he went out of his way to look at my motor a few days earlier then expected and got the whole process underway and completed very quickly.

I have to agree none of the people you speak to on the phone know much about boats, except the acutal assessor, but it doesnt really surprise me as they are not meant to, as they are sales people dealing with all types of insurance.

What does matter is when the :hitsfan: they come through with the goods and offer quick reliable service.

Every thing on the boat is covered on the one policy, sounders, radio and any thing else which is attached to the boat is classed as the hull. So all you do is incorporate their value in to the value of the hull. An electric value is incorporated in to the motor value with the main engine. Very simple stuff.

I am also with GIO. They seem to know how to talk the talk. They cover all the normal stuff...including bags over intakes etc. They also cover the fishing gear on board while out and about as an extra...not included in the boat value, so thats a bonus! They also cover my trailer for theft while at a ramp. And they were a hell of a lot cheaper than CM! :1clap:

Hi,

I recently went through all this. GIO were also the cheapest quote and they will offer NCB next year.

Call me strange but I went with Club Marine because they offered an Agreed Value policy. It was about $70 more over 12 mths. I think/hope they are more experienced with boats. If you do go with Club Marine do your quote on line it is 5% cheaper. The dealer I bought the boat from matched it for me.

Fingers Crossed I don't need it anyway.

She is going to be a custom built 4.3m Elegant Boat with all the whistles and bells.

There is a few points there I hadn't even thought of :bash: like bag over the intake, trailer theft at the ramp, etc.

Anything else I should ask them??

Find out exactly where, when, and how much gear they will cover in the boat.

Do they require any anti-theft measures be fitted?

Agreed value or market value?

Do they cover your electronics as part of the hull price, or as seperate items?

Will they cover a bow-mount if fitted?

MAKE SURE THEY COVER THE TRAILER...and transport of boat if trailer should get pinched!

Some policies will give you a total sum figure of your boat, whereas GIO does it as Boat Motor and Trailer as seperate items, each with its own value.

I also took up the skiers option which will cover anyone hurt while towing a ski or biscuit. Worth the $40 extra I reckon! :1Lighten:

Hi Everyone

My Stacer is with club marine, The previous boat was with them as well but only because It was done at time of purchase, I didn't even think of shopping around but will be next year.

Haven't had to use it yet (touch wood) and hopefully won't, Must admit the guy at CM wasn't to helpfull last time I spoke with them.

Cheers.
