Hey guys,

Being relatively new to the world of overhead small game reels ( by this i mean like never before this year)

I was wondering if anyone had some good pointers about setting up the drags on these reels. I have read about the 1/3rd bracking strain and that you can use spring scales to set them up but i currently don't own a spring scale and if i buy one i still don't know how to acheive the correct consitant result.

I own a tld 20 with a shimano tipan 15-24kg rod with a roller tip and a

tyrnos 30 with shimano backbone of the same spec's if that helps

Thanks

Yes 1/3 the breaking strain is correct.

A set of spring scales, depending on the weight class will set you back $20 - $60+ for a decent set. Shimano make some for 25 bucks. I would recommend a 20 odd kg scale.

To set the drag you need a bimini twist in the line so you can hook it around the scales or any type or ring, snap etc. that can do the job. Some people like to sit the rod in the holder to set the drag but I prefer to hold the rod.

To set the drag, first thing to do is warm it up by pulling 10 - 20m of line. Once that is done the person with the rod stays stationary and the one holding the scales walks back a bit slower than walking pace. Making sure the rod is under a load.

The reading on your scale should be shown by a little indicator that stays at the highest point at which the scales pulled. Set this to 1/3 the strain and you should be fine.

Remember to store your reels in free spool with the ratchet on.
