gretsch Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 (edited) Gidday Raiders, Sorry for the late post. I was waiting for photos to be sent by the dudes I was fishing with and alas, I've not received them as yet. My camera had a flat battery as the forgot to charge it overnight. I will push on with the written report and add the photos as they come to hand. I organised another charter in the Harbour on Friday. We started out for Squid at all the usual haunts and they were very slow. After two hours, we found a patch and ended up with six large Calamari.... off to Middle Harbour to see if the Kings were there. We tried the usual haunts for a few good hits but no fish landed. The sister boat to ours was anchored adjacent to us. They had a massive hit and the fish got to the bottom against a very heavy drag and busted them off. We were encouraged by this and waited for another half hour or so with not a pick and then, decided to move. Up to Spot X, baits go down and WHACK.... we are onto a hot bite. It is late in the session at this stage; about 11.00am. We hauled in 11 Kingies over a 30 minute period. They were all legal with the largest going 65cm. Unbelievable for late May. It was like a mid summer bite. We kept seven; one for me, one for Craig and 5 for Shadi - he has a large family and was to have them around over the weekend to devour the free fish. Saturday we went again. On my own boat this time. Usual drill..... Squid then Kings. Again, the Squid were slow. We only caught one little inkjet at the Spit. We then motored outside and picked up four large Calamari. Back to Middle Harbour we go. We saw Hookm and Co. on the spot we wished to try so we gave them a wide berth and headed straight for Spot X. Pulled up, legendary anchor job, baits go down then BANG.... on again. This time we pulled 14 Kingies over about an hour. They were all legal and the largest was again, 65cm. The bite went off as quickly as it had started. We moved again, bumped into a fellow Raider WWF4wf45 (you know who you are.. I can't find your name on the list). They downrigged a couple of smallish fish whilst we were watching and gave me some sh*t about my Stella. They had been out all night.. man, that is dedication. Anyway, that is it. Great couple of days. Hopefully they are still around this weekend. Cheers Ceph Edited May 30, 2007 by Ceph
sanger Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 (edited) Good to see you got back on the water so quick ceph after losing a loved one!!! Now if you could just leave some of those kings in middle harbour for me to chase it would be much apreciated!!!!!! Might be out saturday morning in MH if anyones going to be around. I'll be in a trailcraft 660 launching from rosville..... no doubt be under the spit for squid first thing if all goes to plan!!!! Edited May 29, 2007 by fishlexic
ophet Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 (edited) Ha ha, G'day Ceph, yes that was me in the boat downrigging. We were actually in my brother's boat, stayed the night catching squid. Sorry for giving you stick about the Stella, couldn't resist - your fishing buddies seemed to see the funny side Seriously, you have to laugh about these things, otherwise it will eat you up inside !! I have had it happen to me, but luckily I managed to get the rig back !!! Hey, would your Spot X (where you caught the 14 kings on Saturday) be the same spot that you lost your Stella? I think I may have seen you there earlier in the day. Cheers, and see you around. Edited May 29, 2007 by 445F

stricko4 Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Ceph, Went out on the harbour on our first ever charter last Wednesday & the loss of you Stella was a topic of conversation with us too. You have my sympathy on that one mate. However this was to be the day I caught my first ever kingie. Our day was much the same as yours in that squid were difficult to pick up & the biggest was actually taken over at the wave marker at Dobroyd while baiting for the kings. A huge calimari it was too. Tasted great that evening btw. After boating 3 squid we tried the sunken wedding cake for not a bite then Dobroyd for only the big squid then after a short coffee break at The Spit we anchoured up not too far from the bridge in what i was thinking was the most unlikely spot & the baits went down again. Within a few minutes that zzzzzzzzzzzz sound was ringing in our ears as one after the other kings jumped on our baits. Smiles were the order of the day as 3 of us managed to boat our first ever kings. Even the was in on the act & that was great as she was the one who'd organised the day for my bro & myself. We managed to boat 6 with me dropping the fisrt overboard before any pics could be taken. Another was dropped as the net went under him but that was not a worry as by then we had all landed at least 1 of these magnificent fish. The final tally for that spot was 8 kings and what a fantastic 30 minute session it was. All were in the 65 to 70cm range. 3 were kept for dinner that evening. After the bite closed down we moved to spot Y & although kings were everywhere on the sounder it was only pickers that took the bait. After an hour or so of seeing the rod tips bounce around from them it was time to pull up for the day & head home. I have to say this was the most exciting session of fishing we had ever experienced & a great big thanks goes out to Criag for showing us it's not impossible for people like us to land great fish. Now all we have to do is put all this new found knowledge into practice & boat some on our own. Paul
