arpie
Hi guys How is this for Kiwi ingenuity?? These are actually Disposable ear plugs. BUT they are excellant addons to your flasher rigs. JUST soak in fish oil and place on hook. YOU will be suprised at the results You could also put it up the top of a long shank hook, with bait or livie hanging off the other end! kiwi waynie
hey roberta have you heard of or seen what my mum calles a contiki? my pop used to use them i think he made them out of news paperfolded up like a little boat, used to sit his rig on it and float it out with the wind far as he wanted then just a little tug and off comes his rig to sink just where he wanted it!?! Hey Wildfish. Hope this helps. When i did a search it seems kite fishing has become very popular back home. Kontiki history in New Zealand In New Zealand kontiki fishing has always been a popular way to deploy fishing lines well offshore and catch fish for the table, it's also a lot of fun! Originally the fishing kontiki in was either a small sail powered boat - about one to two metres long - or car inner tubes fitted with sails. A peice of hard soluble confectionery fitted on a cord would keep the sail hoisted. This would slowly dissolve and drop the kontiki sail and sometimes release a weight to anchor the fishing line once the wind powered kontiki was well offshore. Large inflated plastic tubes with a with a bridle fitted to hold them across the wind have also been a popular kontiki method at times. The older wind powered kontiki is seldom seen on the popular beaches these days. Over the last 18 years Paul's Fishing Kites have become the most popular wind powered fishing method because a kite is a lot more efficient than a wind powered kontiki for deploying fishing tackle offshore. This is because a kite flies above ground turbulence and the higer you fly a kite - the stronger the wind. Lata Raida. Waynie.
Penguin
When I was a youngster over in NZ,we used a kontiki all the time from our local wharf or beach. We made it out of 2 long rectangular peices of polystirene, the type u find out the back of a TV or electrical goods store. these were joined by 2 bits of wood and had a sail made out of garbage bag material and we had a glucose lolly and string to hold the sail up. Caught lots of big fish with it and lost a few rigs to some big monsters. I had sell lots of bottles to afford to buy more hooks and leaders. penguin
arpie
Hi Kiwi Waynie Nah - wasn't my idea ..... found it on a kiwi site! Haven't actually tried it yet .... I have however, toyed with the idea of putting those 'fish oil' capsules onto a hook (with or without bait) to see if they trail sufficient oil to get a strike! No hits yet! Hey Luke - I played around with a 'plastic bag' contiki off Paunanui Beach (Coromandel) some 15 years ago! Caught a snapper, gurnard & small kingie! Basically I filled 2 garbage bags with air & tied them off well( to contain the air.) Attached my long line to it & sent it out on a fairly strong off-shore wind! I also have 2 of Paul's fishing kites (smaller ones) that I have played with ... never caught anything tho .... yet! I had them up to 150m+ in the air from my backyard deck in NZ! There is some pull on them! If/When you come up this way, we can have a play with them again! From memory, it suited west coasters rather than us east coasters, as (obviously) if we were getting onshore breezes, they were getting off shore breezes! In Auckland, it can take just 1/2hr to get to the West Coast (even less in some places!) Not like Aussie - a 5 day car trip! Hi Davy - try just cutting some bits of foam off the kitchen foam sponges (about 5 for $2) should do the trick .... check with the first tho! Don't want to get into Cheers Roberta

gone_wishin
Last time I was in NZ I bought a fishing magazine and was suprised to find the gadgets they sold to recreational fisherman. They had something similar to a Kontiki, but it was a torpedo. Stick with me here... it was similar to what a scuba diver might use to power around under water, this version had floats so it remained on the surface. It came with a massive reel (like lifesavers have) you add your long line (yes that's right rec fisho's can long line) and send it off into the blue yonder. The other item was a mini scallop dredge for trailer boats.
