smoothaz
How far under a float would you put a pilchard?
bobfish
How far under a float would you put a pilchard? Hey smoothaz, For x-large sambos i use a 4 foot leader under a float, with a live or dead yellow tail on a 2 or three hook arrangement. I have found that gang hooks can pull easily from the salmons soft mouths. If need be a small pea sinker, running on the trace, can keep the bait down. My pb salmon is 76cm and i have dropped a bigger one on those gangs On the other hand, if you can see them busting up the surface, nothing beats a metal slug! I will give it a try under a float and take a few baits. Most people down my way use bottom rigs and dont catch much.4 ft trace sounds good for here as well. Thanks for helping guy/girls. caine
Off the rocks I would recommend a 30g halco twisty With about 30cms of trace, then swivel, then main line You will get a good cast with 20 to 30lb braid as main line. If you see them pop on the surface then cast at them, and rip back the lure as fast as you can across the surface with your rod tip pointing down. when you get a hit raise your rod to strike. This method will work well on any surface fish like tailor, kings, bonito ECT for some reason salmon go 10 times harder on lure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!IMO

sanger
I two will vouch for the 30 gram halco twisty!!!! They are very effective, also caught alot with spanyid maniacs but these dont cast as well so i usually only use them from a boat!!!!!! I prefer to use lures on them than bait because its the more active way to chase them!!!!

On Edge
TRYING TO TAKE ON SOME BIG SALMON AND NEED ADVICE ON HOW TO DO IT FROM THOSE THAT KNOW?I WILL BE FISHING FROM A ROCK WALL INTO AT LEAST 10MTRS OF WATER. I HAVE USED A FEW METHODS OF THE ROCKS & FOUND FLOATING LIVE OR DEAD BAITS THE BEST AND MOST FUN. I USE PILCHARDS ON SMALL GANGS ABOUT 3.0'S THE SMALLER THE PILCHARD THE BETTER, USE ABOUT 1M OF 30-35LB MONO TRACE A SMALL GOOD QUALITY BARREL SWIVEL A SMALL BALL SINKER FOLLOWED BY A FLOAT RUNNING ABOUT 600MM TO 1M OF LINE FOLLOWED BY A SMALL GOOD QUALITY BARREL SWIVEL & THEN YOUR 30-35LB MONO AS MAIN LINE I AM NOT A BIG BRAID USER FROM THE ROCKS. THE SAME METHOD WORKS WELL WITH 2/3rds OF A PILCHARD ON A 4-5/0 AND HALF HITCH YOUR TRACE AROUND THE TAIL, WORKS GREAT. SOMETIMES LEAVING SLACK ON YOUR LINE, AS SWELL GOES UP & DOWN HELPS KEEP THE BAIT DOWN WITHOUT THE NEED FOR A SINKER ON YOUR TRACE. GOOD LUCK!
