HI guys

Got myself a new camera to play with - Pentax Optio W30 - waterproof to 3m & 2hrs continuous underwater shooting. Keith is going overseas next week & will take it with him, so we can claim back the GST.

Has anyone done that before? Can you walk me thru it?

There used to be a customs booth at Sydney Airport where you could lodge the details and they would mail you a cheque . I haven't seen it for ages but go to or call the Australian customs site as they will know and you can probably download the forms. Had to be over a certain amount of duty all on one invoice last time I checked and from a company registered for GST. Be caefull as the letter of the law used to say that if you brought the item back into aussie it you had to include it in your duty free allowance calculation . Never saw it enforced but don't know what the current laws are.

Yes you can claim the GST back.

You will need receipt and the camera with you (not packed in your luggage on its way to the plane)

The camera must be over $300 to be eligable (which it sounds like it is)

Cant remember the name of the office but there is an office in the airport where you go to claim

Its down a little corridor on your left just after you go through passport control/security - someone will point you in the right direction (I assume you are flying out of Sydney airport).

As mentioned, you need the camera and receipt with you. You fill in a short form and then they can recredit the GST onto your credit card in a few days. Its all very painless!

Thanks for that, guys - it was just over $400, so is elegible & for the features it has, is a bargain!!!

Sifisho - great to know it can be relatively painless! The other half hates filling in forms!! WOnder if you can get one to fill in before you go thru? Yep - leaving from SYdney.

I played with the camera for ages last night - figured I may as well get a waterproof one, given my passion for fishing & things wet! I was surprised at some of the negative reviews on the Olympus Muju series - the bonus of them being shockproof as well, but they reckon the results in photos isn't crash hot & the buttons difficult to use! WHereas the Optio seems easy to use & has better reviews on photo results.

I have sorted out the 'Green" button so that I now have instant access to EV compensation, bigger pixel mode & sensitivity without having to go thru the menu! Ran the battery down for the first time ( but it wasn't fully charged to start off with.) Must get a spare! Very user friendly! And a first for Pentax Optios ..... you can actually hear the photo being taken with a 'ker-chunk' noise (that you can make louder or softer!) YAY! The previous 2 I have had always annoyed me because you couldn't hear the photo being taken!

It is waterproof to 3m & I can't wait to burley up an area in my yak & stick it underwater & see what turns up! However, I will only have it for a week before the other half takes it o/s for 3 weeks! Then I get it back again!! He is not really techo minded, so probably won't even use it!

It has so many features - you can even use it purely as a voice/music only recorder. You can do 'soft edge' shots, fit a frame around your photo straight away, all sorts of things! When it makes a cup of tea for you in the morning, I will be really impressed!

I have already put it in a neoprene cover for extra protection & added an extra long leash, so that it will fit around my neck ALWAYS wherever i go. As it isn't shockproof (like the Olympus Mujus) it is important not to drop it (unlike a previous camera I had .... which only fell from my knees to the floor ..... of a moving bus ..... whilst I was in 'edit' mode ..... never been the same again! Zoom function completely kaput!) Then I dunked it in the sea when trying my first off-beach launch in May - amazed that it came back at all after all that! But it has, altho it is a bit tempramental! It works when it wants to - so don't want it to 'not work' when I have the fish of a lifetime on the line - otherwise, it is still 'Oh Yeah - where's the photo??"

The extra long leash around the neck will also prevent it from falling into the depths off the yak, should it slip from my grasp! There is a skin that you can get for it for better grip, or put goop on it like a buddy did in the States - will go down that road if required!

You almost need a university degree to read the manual - will take notes, next time!

Put one on your xmas list for recording your fishing best!! Same as most, it has got a good video recorder included on it, too.

Cheerio for now
