I just received a catalogue which had a huge discount on overhead reels. Theres a Tekota 700 & 800, a TLD 25 that im looking into.

I was just wondering if they would handle tuna and small marlin?

TLD 25 would handle nearly most tunas even the larger ones.......A tekota 800 will handle em up to about 25kg...anything above that getting spooled may become an issue.

I have seen some tunas take out 100 metres of line at extreme speeds and the level wind on the tekota 800 may become a problem if that happened

Mate: Tekota will handle as well as a TLD, in fact it is a better quality reel than the TLD and i personally prefer it to use than my tld 25. I have 500m 15kg mono on my tekota 700. It has landed black and stripes to around 90kg, a few small yellowfin and a number of dog tooth tuna in the coral sea to 40kgs.

In my opinion the TLD 25 is more suited to fishing for tuna and marlin up to 100kg. Sure you can land them on a Tekota, but the TLD would be my choice for its lever drag as opposed to star drag, and no levelwind as well as greater line capacity. Try to steer away from levelwinds, another option to look at would be a tyrnos 30, the next model up from a TLD.

Greetings Nectic and fishraiders

I was also thinking of getting a tekota 800, but not for gamefish such as marlin or tuna, but for deep

water fish on 10kg line. such as gemfish , blue eye etc etc, most likely at browns mountain.

the reason i am going for the tekota is the level wind.

The line i will be using is .40mm thick (I picked up a massive bulk spool of it)

(incidently the weights i will be using to get to the bottom on browns mountain will be sacrificial), they

will be homemade concrete balls, attached to the rig on 6lb line, so they will break off on retrieval)

so do you think that the tekota will be decent for my application, and what do you reckon the real

line capacity would be if your using .40mm thick monofilament.

regards ilk

PS thanks guys for replying to my pen 950ss question, earlier.

Mate winding up gemfish from browns with any reel will put very heavy strain on the tackle and the angler, i recommend you look into a alvey deck winch for that purpose
