G'day Raiders.

Been a keen fisherman all my life but to this point have relied mostly on 'disposable' / cheap rods and reels and the odd present thrown in here and there. As a result I've got NFI in terms of serious tackle/gear knowledge and would appreciate a bit of basic advice re an overhead reel I'm about to purchase.

The reel is to go with an old rod I recently had fixed up with an eye to returning to its glory days (during which it nailed a couple of 5kg South Coast snapper - seems like a long time ago!)

I'd be fishing somewhere around 6 - 8kg (presumably mono as I've got even less idea about gelspun etc than I do about reels). General use - a bit of bottom bashing, bit of trolling, possibly a bit of livebaiting for small kingies.

I'm on a relatively tight budget of about $130 and I don't really know where to start.

Any pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

HI Nook,

I recently bought a cheap bait caster from Watto out here at St Marys it was $40 it's a Viva it's in that line class and i cant fault it so far. It's caught a few fish so far though nothing that can strip line like a king but i'd be confident it could stand up to it. I dont think it will last for years (may suprise me yet) nor do i expect it to hey only $40. I've got a Diawa 6HM that i've had for a very long time (?17 years) cost me somthing like $200 and it is still in ok cond and the Viva is every bit as good as it (for now). So my opinion think about the cheapy for a fixed up rod and if you like the over head put your change into a laybuy on the best rod and reel you can afford and you will know what you want by then and it will last. Good luck.

Lata Raida.

Mate I have a Shimano TLD star 20/40 loaded with braid that I have used for flatty & snapper fishing for the past 5 years. They are a great robust reel. I highly recommend them.

And to be offered one for $100......I'd be snapping it up with two hands.
