KingsRule Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Well, last season i got blasted away more times than i can remember fishing landbased around the harbour. Using my symetre 4000/snapper raider and a few times on my BR 4500 . This season im looking to upgrade a little in stregnth. I have my eye on the daiwa capricorn 4500j , or the shimano spheros 12000 or even a 14000. These reels seem to have alot more stopping power and matched with a decent rod could provide alot of pull. id Ideally go a salgita, but at this stage its just to exspensive. So what do u guys think? Rob
wildfish Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 i think theres a 12000 spheros for sale in swap/sell! if your after saving!
KingsRule Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 Ah yeah , there up, just dont have the money at the moment. Im thinking in paring it up with a T-curve king mack 10-15kg

Rob Hi Kingsrule. Ever thought of having a good look at the Banax range for excellent quality without the high price tag ? regards jewgaffer

jewgaffer Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 (edited) Yes..yes i do Jewgaffer - i havnt thought of the banax range. Im a bit of a shimano person ,cant resist a big shiny reel Hi KingsRule In that case if I want a "big and shiny shimano" to be value for fish n' chips I would buy one of my own favourites and also Gary Brown's which is a big Pflueger 7570 the direct opposite in more than one good way. All you have to do with that one is tease the biggest kingfish and clean the big Pflueger well after use as the only fault detectable by an expert is minute paint particle corrosion if you leave it covered in salt. Nobody can ever overlook shimano 6500, a great workhorse around for almost decades and now available at a bargain price. The next step up from there are the big no frills Penn 7500, 8500 or 9500 SS'S the shark reel of the series along with the big and shiny banax I mentioned . These are the benchmarks and everything else are like hi fidelity systems where you spend an arm and a leg for less than a heart beat and your jewies and kingfish wouldn't know the difference but they'd be pretty tired when you finish with them coz these reels rule the roost. Anyway that's only what I think and I hope this helps answer your question from another point of view, top quality, top performance, and minimum $$'s, no debates as to inherent faults like some of the huge dollar ones, no disatisfaction returns and not many listed for sale. Piss'n'Broke Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Hey Rob How are you going to fish this new rig?????? Lures, sp's, or live baiting??? If your using lures and sps check and watch the weight of the reel you get!!! As even a 4500 will make your wrist ache after a hour or so of casting for sambos! Sumething to consider mate! DAN D&G
KingsRule Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 very true jewgaffer , just wondering if you have any of the new spinfishers , was put off them when they moved production out of the US. Dan - it will be used for livebaiting and heavier baitfishing. I have another outfit for lures
caranx Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I have started using an 850ssm this past summer and cant fault it . Using 15kg braid for lures etc and works well. If landbased, livebaiting with an eggbeater isnt as easy as an overhead. Maybe you need something with a baitrunner function.
jewgaffer Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 (edited) very true jewgaffer , just wondering if you have any of the new spinfishers , was put off them when they moved production out of the US. Dan - it will be used for livebaiting and heavier baitfishing. I have another outfit for lures Hi Kingsrule, I have the older models like 750ss, 850ss but I also have 2x9500 ss. You could get an accurate opinion of the all Asian ss models from Tony at fishfinder tackle shop. There is also an ssj series which was made as a Japan model when big spinning reels suddenly became very popular in Japan a few years ago. Again I don't know enough about them to recommend them to you. But made for japan made has always been good so I think the ssj model was tweeked and finished to suit the fussy japanese market. Otherwise hardly used U.S. Spinfsher ss's on U.S.ebay are an excellent buy round $140.00 U.S. ( a collectors item sort of price) and only about an extra $30 U.S. express airmail via U.S.P.S. The other thing is the 9500ss is closer to a shark reel and the 7500 and the 8500 will suit you better and would subdue the biggest jew or king, don't worry about that and they are lighter and nice to handle L.B. thanks KingsRule Cheers Jewgaffer Edited August 10, 2007 by jewgaffer
SZ1 Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Hi there, mate I have practically both the reel you meantioned, I recently purchase a spheros 1400 and a Fream 4500J off a fellow member, which is the jap version of the capricon. So far either is yet to touch water and believe me I'm itching. Both reel feels great and the Daiwa can dish out some drag at 9kg max. Regarding Spheros the 1200 is basically the same size as the 1400 only difference is the 1400 has a deeper spool. I personally would go the 1400 as its the same price as the 1200. Anyways good luck with ur purchase and I'm sure you would find an out fit that you will enojy. Cheers
squidboy Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Rob, I have seen you on the water a few times nailing those kings at spot X I would like to say that I know it may not be land based gear, but a tyrnos 20 with 80lb mono and a 24kg stick of any kind will slow down those Hoodlums. land Based, I use a 14ft rod so it has a fair amount of leverage and castability. The reel, well if you can afford a stella, go for it mate. its gunna stop those Kings, if not hurt them!. For now, Ill stick with my Tyrnos, I lock it up and have turned 1m + kings so far. but I would love for a king to try their luck on busting me up lol. See you on the water, carving up those Kings again in 2007. Squidboy (Marco)

Seems more suited for casting big baits out for jewies etc but it will definitely put some hurt on a king. I've always been an alvey man and love the power they offer (much needed when groper fishing) but I was considering an O/H for this very purpose. Will keep using them when fishing the wash for the bread n butter fish but need something with a serious drag for when the live baits hit the water. Will most likely build the rod up as a custom though...still shopping around but was curious to know the specifics of your rod??? At 14ft Im guessing it would be a pretty serious beach rod yeah? Cheers RH
