first update your antivirus and run it! if you need a free one download agv from grisoft!

update and run anti spyware eg!ad-aware se! spy bot search and destroy! both free downloads!

then get back to me! you probably could do with some other rutine maintenance steps also. but start with those then we progress!

may be an idea to run the antivirus etc in safe mode. alot of viruses cannot be removed unless in safe mode for some reason. Another online scanner to try is pandasoftware activescan,it wont remove it but will detect all viruses-this is the one i normally use first

Trend micro is a good one.,,, I will try and find the link for the online can

You need java to run it which you can download from this site during the scan. I was always told virus's/torjans are easily pickup by java as its harder to infiltrate, or hack.... Hope it helps.

Be warned the scan can take a llllllllllllllllooooooooooonnnnnnnnngggggggggg time

Absolutely, adaware and spybot, get a firewall inplace as well if you aren't using one, many better freebies out there than the microsoft firewall (at least use it in the meantime if you are not using any firewall).

G'day Cam ,

Having been through similar problems a few times , back up your essential files , reformat and re-install Windows. I know , I know , everyone hates reformatting , it takes forever to reinstall your drivers etc , but you get a great clean copy of Windows , and your computer should run like new again!!

If you do not want to go that route , a program that is a must is Crap Cleaner. This program cleans out stuff from places you probably didnt even know existed ! Things like index .dat files , cookies , history , Explorer MRU's , chkdsk file frgaments and a whole stack more.

as above, also then use (abexo) free registery cleaner easy to find at google etc

very easy to use, do a backup, included then scan and delete what it tells you,

NOTE. it has a help file so read this first!

..cheers!..stevo!..

also! does sound like spyware some of them are way worse than a virus. eg. TROJAN.

not that hard to clean up! and you can get a good result! personally i would probably do a fresh install as its probably been a while but if not knowing what your doing you could get it very wrong! also may not have windows copy!

just run those 3 programs and let me know how it went!

hi all

thanks all for your advice highly apprecitated!!

i did the pandasoftware activescan and it can up with some stuff that it disinfected, the computer now is better but the problem is not fixed.

it seems that the computer was bought in 2003 that it maybe time for a reformating etc. as my sisters boyfriend works in IT he is going to do this sometime, and them we will get a good firewall.

Ray R i asked mum and she said ask your father and he said NO, GET IT FIXED :mad3:

There are two things to check

1) Is there a virus/malware on your PC

2) Check to see if you have too many programs loading when your PC starts up

Check to see if there is a virus or malware on your PC.

===================================

Follow these instructions

Download and run this program called Hijack this program can be downloaded from

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

1) Run the program

2) Get the log file

3) Copy and paste the contents of the log file and send it across to me. I'll see if I can point you in the right direction.

Clean Boot your PC

=============

Pc's tend to get cluttered with alot of un-necessary programs starting up. By running the clean boot you are disabling some of these un-neccessary programs from starting up. Here are some steps for you to try.

Click on Start/Run type MSCONFIG

Click on Startup

You will then have alist of programs. What you will need to do is carefully go through the list and if there is a program that you do not want to start up just untick and click on OK and reboot the PC

Feel free to shoot us a PM if you need any further help

Just a handy tip as well, Make sure you run your Windows updates regularly and ensure you download all your security updates. I would recommend that you run Windows Updates once a week. (In IE click on tools/Windows Update)

I recommend getting "Easy Tune 5" and just monitoring the heat of the cpu and see if the fans are operating properly.

If they're not goin so well and comp is heating up, might need to take it somewhere to get fans replaced or buy the fans to replace em yourself.
