A Flathead's Friends

It appears to be the week of first timers, another one here.

As I sit in my office thinking about getting out and going fishing I thought I would post my first report.

Motivated by reading Fishraiders reports for the past 4 or 5 months I managed to get out yesterday afternoon to check and see if the boat still goes, relax a bit and try a litlle SP'ing for flatties.

Put in at Roseville and found one tailor in a bay in in M.H. (Kept for bait - just in case!) Then went round to The Spit/Balmoral. No luck there either too windy. Then after thinhing about some of your reports I thought I would check out North Harbour and try drifting between the boats dragging a strip of tailor and casting a SP, chasing anything. Second cast, flattie.

It's now my afternoon became a bit more interesting. As the flattie came up to the back of the boat I saw it was escorted either side by two BIG kingies. :1yikes: (The flattie was around 33 - 35 cm and the kings were 3 times the length, they could have eaten the flattie in one go) I stopped winding and let the flattie sit about a meter under the water and watched for about 30 seconds as the kingies just circled it, they didn't touch it, just harrased it. I put the rod in the holder and grabbed the other rod with the Tailor fillet on it and hung that under their noses, still no result. I then quickley chopped the head of the tailor and put that on the hook but by this time the flattie had escaped and the kings had gone.

I frantically went chasing a livie. It took about twenty minutes to catch a yellowtail and then spent another hour looking and livebaiting to no avail, the kings had gone or just weren't interested. (Probably just as well as I think in the middle of all the moorings the fight would have lasted about 5 seconds.)

All in all a good afternoon, cleaned out the cobwebs, sat and had a , went home fishless but with a load of motivation to get out there again soon.

What a top # 1 report !!!!!!!!

Welcome to the Raider Family :1welcomeani:

By the way ....................... it was a great report, but the ending SUCKED!

I was sooooooooooo hoping you would have brained one of those Kingys :yahoo:

I hope you have more luck with the fish because the next report you write,,,,,,,,,,should end on a better note! ( I bet you would have killed Harry Potter off in the last book if you were writing it)

Cheers,

Stumpy

(Bored, but eagerly waiting for the social  )

HB, whenever kingies follow a hooked fish up to the boat you can usually entice them to strike by casting baits or lures. Number 1 option is a live squid of strip of squid. If squid is unavailable, the second best option is a lightly weighted, or unweighted soft plastic - such as a sluggo, jerk shad or even a large squidgy wriggler - or a blooping popper, like a halco rooster. Fished erratically near where the kingies just were can turn the lookers into goers..

Tight lines

Thanks for the tip ElwoodBlues, but I am the boss. :074:

And to Keenist, thanks for your tip, I had a bucket load of plastics on board. I never even thought about it but I could have saved myself a lot of time tring to catch one live bait.

It's tips like this that make joining this site worth while.

Mate.. thats awesome...

We have caught a few kings whilst plasticing for flatties.. you get a rude shock when a king is peeling 6lb Fireline off your 1000 and all you can see is the backing coming through until all goes quiet as a mooring chain is found.... :mad3:

North Harbour is a good flattie spot. I find that the flatties sit under the boats. :biggrin2:
