The Poacher
tailor2.bmpHi, Took a few mates out on saturday morning. The 20knot + southerly stopped us getting out early, but fished the mouth of the Hawkesbury from about 8. The tailor were on the surface feeding actively and small lasers did the trick. They didnt have birds on them, and I think most boats had just gone straight past. After getting a feed we moved around a bit and eventually pulled a flattie on a live yellowtail. Earlier had got a trevally in with the yakkas on the bait ground. I was happy with the feed considering the crappy weather. There were 30+ boats on flint and steel not catching much that I could see. Saw some dolphins in Pittwater and a fairy penguin on the way home. The Poacher Edited October 21, 2007 by The Poacher
james7
Well done "The Poacher". It was hard to see the fish in the photo as it was a very small image. However, there was clearly a good feed there. Excellent flattie. How big was it? To top it off you saw dolphins and a fairy penguin. By my accounts, that's an excellent day! pelican
I'm sure he's sorry "Little". Sure you don't prefer "fairy"?
The Poacher
Sorry about that Penguin - I'll try and be more sensitive next time. Peter, I have seen the post on uploading photos and I cant get them anywhere near 60kb without making them very small. The photo showed about half the tailor, a flattie (est 45cm) and a trevally. Andy Loops
We came across a large school of Tailor just off Barrenjoey headland on the Sunday as well - no birds working but the school was moving fast. They are everywhere atm.. on high tide there are heaps of them around Cottage Point - just troll along the rock wall and you'll be hard pressed not to get onto a few! Been smoking quite a few of these critters lately mmm smoked tailor... Nice work on the Flatty.
The Poacher
Funny you should mention that Andy - I smoked 4 on Saturday night. Amazing how tailor flesh goes white when you smoke it, but grey when you cook it.

Andy Loops
Funny you should mention that Andy - I smoked 4 on Saturday night. Amazing how tailor flesh goes white when you smoke it, but grey when you cook it. When you smoke the Tailor how do you stop the flesh drying out a little? I find that the bigger fish I leave in a bit longer but the flesh can get a bit dry. We are getting around 40cm size mark at the moment in Broken Bay. My 2 year old eats nearly half of one of these 40cm smoked fish with a bowl of rice - he loves it! I think they really are underrated both as a bit of fun on light gear and as an eating fish.. although we only ever smoke them.
The Poacher
Hi Andy, Ours were around that size too, and didnt dry out. I could only guess the cooking time was less. I had 6 fillets on the rack at the same time, and I pulled them out when the burner was probably 2/3 through. Would have to guess it was 5 minutes cooking time. They are OK this way - my wife still requires "better quality" eating fish most of the time. Its her way of justifying my time on the boat.
