GregL
Today the Patty and Greg fishing day was spent out chasing kings. We were after something that might pull alittle harder than the usual bream we chase or the bass and blackies of late. A phone call to a mate to see if any good kings were out yet and instead of a bit of info we scored a invite to go fish . How good is that! Before I start I would like to thank Al and Ron for a very informative day. I learnt so so much in a few hours fishing with Al it's just amazing. We hit the water at a total gentlemens hour of 9am!! We cruised out and hit the bait grounds in the harbour and scored a hand full of nice little yakkas, 4 killer slimies, that was amungest the BIGGEST yakkas I have ever seen. Some of these had to go easy 750gms! Out past North Head we pushed around 11am. A quick steam later we pull up to spot 1. Slimies dropped down to the bottom, a few cranks up and open the bail arm and feel that bait twitching away on our 6500exp's. As we neared the hot spot the sounder lights up with bait and suddenly you can feel the slimey panic. Line starts the pull thew your fingers, slow at first then to a blistering rate. Franticly your trying to snap shut the bail arm, you lift to strike but the fish has already taken all the slack line and now your locked against the side of the boat hanging on for dear life with the tip of your rod deep in the water! Screw the bream!! I want kings, kings and more kings!! What happened above worked 4 times with our slimies, yakkas didnt work. We moved on to try Long Reef, as we neared we could see surface activity. I thought salmon, BIG schools of salmon, how wrong I was........ Someone on the boat threw a sluggo out, it got nailed. As the fish came close all we could see were kings EVERYWHERE!! Schools of a hundred or more surfing down the swells, I have never seen kings like this before. Cape York Longtails yeah, Kings??? Yeah we caught a shed load but the footage Ron got was just amazing! The under water footage of kings mixed in with sweep and trevas chasing a bait down just blew me away! Back to the kings. They ranged in size from 50cm to mid 80's that we landed. Some we saw were just CRAZY! Saltiga popper was the gun bait, well anything would have gotten eaten but hey if you can choose why wouldn't it be a big popper! Sorry I didn't pull the camera out till the very end. When I remembered I made Pat have another cast just so I would have a pick for this post! hehehe Here is the last fish of the day. The rest Al took for his work. Darn anyone want to buy a near new Skeeter? Cheers Greg

davester28
Awesome. Can I please ask for more details about the Saltiga popper? Did you mean the Popper or Pencil Popper, size, colour etc? Techniques that you used in fishing it? Did you also try any Saltiga Sliders? Over the off-season, I stocked up on Saltiga Poppers, Pencils and Sliders (floating and sinking) in 14 and 18 cm and I intend to use them on kingies this season. Markwi
Well done on the Kings guy's. Gee how fantastic to have those Kings on the surface and taking poppers as well. I thought Pat was saving all those poppers for Cape York.
GregL
Thanks guys it was a great day. I just can't get them kings outa my head, specially when there were like 10 if them chasing it down until an explosion of white water errupted when one of them has taken a swipe at the lure. David It was the popper in the lazer sardine colour straight outa the packet. Retrieve I use is a blop blop pause, they usually hit it on the pause. You can either use a short lift up or even a fast turn of the handle works well in calmer waters. I have used these poppers for close to 2 years now, they cast a mile on 50lb and make a great wake without killing your shoulders as you work em. I havent tried the sliders yet..... 18 days to go! The Saltiga pencil works but more suited to 20-30lb for casting as they are pretty light. I'm a bit lazy so cast and fast wind wears thin pretty quick on large tackle. In the harbour or for schoolies on top they would be fun. That one day has really got me "G"ed up for the coming trip. I even got my big order of Nomad monster stick baits today delivered to my shop. Big tackle and heavy drags, what wonderful day dreams.......... Greg

Rob The Thunnus would be a good start specially with the bait runner feature, same as the Spheros with out it. Personally I think the Stella was better for live baiting. The no bail trip on the Saltigas is a bitch when you hand line your live bait. Trying to close a bail arm over on a running fish with 15kg's of drag is not easy! I have line burn marks on my wrist to prove it! Greg
