Is there anyone out there mad enough to fly-fish for snapper? If so, what type of fly and what type of retrieve?

I have been trying for a while now with no luck :ranting2: . Al I seem to get are dusky and sand flatties :yahoo: .

Please help!!!!! :1badmood:

Hi Warmonger

I could be wrong but typically Snapper, especially large ones live and feed in much deeper water than you could possibly fly fish in. I expect you are catching flathead in the shallow on a runout tide!!!

I've read articles from the south coast about guys setting a trail and fishing weighted flies down deeper. Nothing big was landed though.

Got a video where a guy has a crack and gets a few pan sized reds as well.

Hi mate,

I've heard of people using fast-sinking shooting heads, heavily-weighted clousers and short, sharp long, slow strips with some success.

If you have a sinking line and a baitfish pattern, have a crack at your local snapper ground. Not much is known about Reds on the fly, you might come up with something new.

Good luck.

Richie.

EDIT: Further information has come to hand.

i have read a few articles a while back now where they were doing it off the rocks in NZ. They had some good success with a number of good snapper landed. They were getting a berley trail going and then having a go, i dont fly fish so i didnt pay more attention sorry!

But i think in NZ big snapper can be found much closer to rock ledges then they typically are here... Good luck!!

I can't see why you couldn't get a Snapper on fly. Low light periods in the shallows will see reds feeding close to the surface and in the shallows if that's where the bait is. A lot of snapper get pinned in very shallow water up here, often before you get the bail arm closed after a cast. I've read reports of guys casting lightly weighted jerkshads to swirls on the surface and coming up tight on a solid red on touchdown. This is on shallow reefs in moreton bay ranging from 7 to 3m deep.

I'm still trying :mad3:

cheers Roo.
