Fished Little Bay

Last Sunday i fished the rocks south of Maroubra beach. Didn't catch anything worthwhile, but a bloke who was targeting Groper said theres kingies at Little Bay. So that got me curious and on my way to Little Bay this week. First dilemma, where do i park? I got to the golf club but wasn't sure if i could park. Do any fishos park there? So around i drove to the chapel. Didn't see anyone, so i parked there. Bloody hell didn't realise how long i had to walk! i should of checked out google earth first, or even a road map!

Anyways got down to the beach to start looking for some possible spots. None on the left to my liking, looked a bit dangerous to go. So walked around to right and looked out, too many rocks and continued i walk. Still nothing good, so kept on walking and i couldn't get around anymore, so i had to climb back up to the edge of the golf course. Thank god it was quiet that day, i walked right between tee off area and a green, i only noticed it on the walk back! Anyways i see a noticeable track down the rocks, so i climbed all the way down. i walked to edge and saw an angel ring and i thought this must be the area where most fishos go

Sorry to have wasted two minutes of your time but i didn't catch anything. Tried stickbaits, poppers and deep divers...nothing! Carried all that gear for nothing. Oh wells i guess i had to try. But i just want to know if i am fishing the right spot? If it is, i'll be back. Check the pic of where i fished and the little trek i took if you're interested.

I have fished the the rocks from Bondi to Tabbigai and a lot of my early rockhopping was done at little bay for blackies, there are two main spots a little bay for kings the first is the live baiting ledge below the golf course boundry on the north side great in a Nor Easterly swell and wind or dead calm days if its from the south give it a miss, on the south side as you head south past the island and doctors rocks you will see the trap (trap by name trap by nature) the north finger is the highest and safest but but again watch the swell both these spots are not forthe novice i have seen guys go in off both spots and its a long swim to the beach! befriend one of the many experienced live baiters in the area and get them to show you the ropes.

Cheers

The spot to try for kingies is called Julian. Its a small deepwater ledge just to the north of Little Bay. You will need cleates and are fairly low swell.

Thats the one billfisher, did not want to name it as a few have gone in off there as well as its next door neighbour on the north side off long bay! You know the place :( Very sad state of affairs there over the last 75 years!

The place to the north luderick angler hinted at is Yellow Rock. I only mention it as a place to avoid. Its a death trap. The rocks are very slippery and slope towards the water and the backwash from waves will carry you in. Scores of people have drowned there.

I have never seen anyone go in at Julian. But as it is not that high from the water you must fish it in a low swell and remember your cleats. As it faces south it is quite protected from the north. The backwash from waves does not reach the fishing ledge but goes behind it, so it is not advisable to retreat from swells.

Hi Royce

I can understand experienced rock fishos fishing off yellow rock on the run down by the amount of king fish likely to be encountered in close. Safety gear and agility is vital there . I wouldn't even go as far as to say that a belt, a rope and a light weight reef anchor be carried in a back pack. There have been fishos go to fish there and around the golf club and have never been seen again.

Noticed quite a few blokes out on the ledge when I went out with Barker from Dolan's last Friday in a limited session to hold his 15 footer about 50 metres or so off Malabar well down the tide in about a 1 1/2 metre swell in a middling north easterly with a fair bit of rock and roll. Well worth the effort mate she was prolific and Barker quickly bagged out with a 75 keeper when we made the last a couple of runs over a much deeper shelf as I suggested. When they originally set the size limits they knew what they were doing and made it harder to get keepers out of the spawning schools which is fair enough.

Cheers
