mako1
Dad,my brother in-law and I were lucky enough to get the day off work on Friday so we headed out to Browns mountain to see if we could finally get our first tuna for this season. Left Botany at about 7:30am and made our way out to Browns.Dropped the lures in at the shelf and after about 5mins the diver and jet head lure get hit but fail to hookup. Then about 2kms from Browns the shotgun goes off and after a short fight a nice little albacore of about 2kgs is landed. The lures went back in and just as we arrived at Browns the small pusher and jet head get hit and my brother in-law David and I land two stripped tuna.I set the lures again and straight away the small jet head gets hit and a better stripped tuna is boated.I set the lures again and as we trolled over Browns we decided that we would have a quick drop before we started cubing.David and I started to pull the lures in as we went to the spot.Just as we got the first two lures in the shot gun went off.I grabbed the rod and I thought it was another stripped tuna as it was coming in really quickly but as it came boat side I saw it was a yellowfin. It was action stations on the boat as we didn't want to loose our first fin for the season, but the tuna had other ideas and took off right under the boat and out the other side.I burried the rod while dad reversed and turned the boat around.I then handed the rod to dad while I got the gaff ready and David filmed all of the mayhem.Afew more circles under the boat and the fish finally surfaced and I gaffed it and hauled it in.It had been over a year since our last fin capture so we were all really happy to have landed this fish.It went 7kg so it wasn't a big fish but it was still very welcome. We then did a couple of drops to the bottom but there were only afew small bites so we decided to get back to the tuna.We cubed for two hours but didn't get a touch. There was a school of small albacore that would bust up every now and then but other then that it was pretty dead cubing. The wind started to pick up so we went back to trolling.Five minutes into the troll two rods go off.My fish took the larger skirt on the larger overhead so I brought him to the boat pretty quickly.I saw my gaff shot and took it and boated a nice 11kg fin. Dad's fish was on an threadline and he had a heap of fun playing the tuna.I missed the first gaffshot but not the second and boated another nice 7kg fin.The lures went in and straight away the short corner gets hit and David is on.This fish fought so hard we all thought it was another fin but it ended up being another stripped tuna.Just as that fish was boated the long corner gets hit.I brought the fish in quickly with the heavy tackle and it ended up being a nice little 4.5kg albacore. We continued to troll abit more over Browns but didn't get another hit so we turned the boat and headed for Botany.About 4kms west of Browns the shotgun and long corner get hit hard but both fish spat the hooks before we could even get the rods out of the holders. We circled around again but didn't get anothr hit. The ride in was bumpy and we were glad to be back at the ramp.Met up with a friend of ours at the ramp and gave him some fish as Dad had promised him some the day before. It was an excellent day out on the water and it was great to finally get some fin this season. The water temp out at Browns varied from 20.2 to 20.4 degrees. There was alot of bait in the water and heaps of bluebottles. When I cleaned the fin their stomachs were full of small gemfish about 4-6cm long, the stripped tuna were full of tiny shrimp and the albacore were full of small shrimp and squids. Steve07
Sounds like you had some great fun out there amongst the tuna, well done its always a welcome sight to see yellowfin come over the side, they are great fish to catch at any size. Its funny that you mention that all your fish were caught trolling & none on the cube,as i no of about 30 yellowfin getting caught during the week by 4 0r 5 different boats & all fish some up to 25kg were caught on the troll with skirts, jet heads & bibless minnows.Even the albacore which there are stacks of out there at the moment are taking trolled lure's better than cubes. Great to see plenty of fisho's getting amonst them while the good 19 to 20degree water is out there, hopefully it stays that way for a few more weeks. steve
offtap1
Good days fishing there boys, sounds like the 2 hours spent cubing would of been better spent on the troll, but thats fishing . It also seems the bottom dwellers are a bit harder to come buy lately. Cheers Dave
