Two Sessions In Two Days

Hi again Raiders

I pick up Kiwi Waynie as arranged at 9am and we headed not for Plumpton Lake as we'd spoken about the evening before but to Penrith Weir to meet up with another fishing addict to share in a spot of Carpin'!!!

On arriving at the weir we negotiated the rock barrier and I setup my trusted Carpin' stick with my new Boilie bait on a hair rig on the bottom. With my rod resting on my bite alarm I pick up my lure casting outfit and head across the swollen waters of the weir throwing lures in hope of some Bass action... and success... as I neared the Western bank a change of lure coaxed a 28cm model from the turbid H2O. Meanwhile the others are happily tempting Nepean Herring on small hooks and Wonder White... as a brief downpour dampened them down!!!

After an hour or so with no Carp interest the Kiwi suggests that we head off down stream in search of some action. Our other buddy declines and heads for the pub!!!

We setup in a lovely little section of the river where a bay is protected from the flowing water of the main(now partially flooded) river!!! We both set up two rods... The Kiwi with his traditional bottom rigs set up with corn and bread baits and I experimenting with new hair rigs, Boilies, etc. I'm afraid the Pommie way of doing things has really got me!!!

The Kiwi was the first to hook up from a take on corn... he battled valiantly but in an attempt to get great photos for you guys... as he had the creature just about beaten, he gave it a touch too much, the hook pulled and his prize disappeared into the murky depths!!!!

Well that was just the start!!! Over the next hour we took turns to catch 10lb and 11lb models on our ultra light outfits. My first fell to a double corn pop-up on a hair rig!!! My first success with these new rig types. And exactly as I'd expected I hooked up in the corner of the mouth.

One happy PJ Garn!!! 10lb Common

Beautiful hook placement!!!

One happy Kiwi!!! 11lb Common

After all this fun the Carp went quiet and suddenly all the action was on the surface!!! A school of Mullet was working the bay!!! As they busily consumed the bread we'd thrown as berley... I quickly changed rigs and in no time I witnessed a 38cm fish cruise to the surface and hook into my crusty offerings!!!! One more at 47cm and they disappeared as quickly as they came!!!

Robson056.jpg

Gee they bleed easily and stink like Sea Pike!!!

Back to the waiting and we were finally contemplating calling it a day when the Kiwi hooks into another beauty, I get the camera and for the first time we video the Kiwi hooked into a beautiful lightly coloured fighting machine. Finally he banks his prize and discovers it's a personal best going 73cm and approx 12lb!!! Well done my mate!!!!

Robson063.jpg

Personal Best & what a beauty!!!

Now not to be outdone and to win the day, I decide that it's about time these Carp start enjoying these Boilie thingies I've made and within minutes of the Kiwis finest achievement I mentally will a fish to take my bait... finally these strange baits (now known as PJ Garn's Carp Lollies) work!!! After an epic battle on the ultra light outfit (also captured by the Kiwi on video), I'm rewarded with not my personal best, but certainly a fish to remember. The dark old man went 82cm and approx 16lb!!!

PJ Garn's Carp Lollies work!!!

As an end note, I had a nagging toothache all day but it didn't seem to matter but it's off to the Dentist again next week!!! I'm sorry this post is so long! If you made it to the end you obviously enjoy Carp as much as we do... we tip our hats to the beauties that we encountered on the Nepean yesterday!!!!

I'll post snippets of the video when I work out how!!!

Cheers as always

G'day,

Now i just have to clear somthing up " i dont like carp as a fish" I do love their fighting ability on 3kg gear.

The Garn and i are like the odd couple. One a expat pommie carp lover who would like everybody to rethink how carp are seen in this country. The other a carp killin son of a ...... who would like to remove as many as he can. I'd rather see the natives have the lions share of our rivers.

Did you notice the caring way in which we are holding the fish? We had to do that so as the photos were able to be shown to PJ's cuzzies back home. It felt weired

The fighting ability of these fish will give any angler a work out. I recon some of you blue water guys would benifit from some pre season training.

Hope PJ Garn gets some video sorted soon (i'm not so good at this tecno stuff) there is some good footage even though it was shot on a still camera.

Great report mate, still on a high from our day wooo hooo!

Lata Raidas.

Terrific report PJ  .

Great fishing also :1fishing1: . I have been thinking about getting into some carp fishing for a while now. Blackfish and flatties are a lot of fun to catch but don't grow to the size ( some flathead do but very rarely catch them) or power of those monster carp.

You've inspired me to have a go. :biggrin2:

Thanks Howard
