Wallis Lake Fishing In The Yak

Hi guys

The weather was absolutely gorgeous on Sunday, so I headed off to The Paddock to toss some poppers around, drop some weed in amongst the racks & fish my floats for some mullet!!

On the shallows, I was tossing a surecatch popper across the sandy bits & then saw a bream swirl off to the side, so sped up the wind to fast, to retrieve the lure & toss it at the bream ..... and a huge whiting was hot on the popper's tail, but didn't take it! I think the popper won the race!

Got into the leases & threw my mullet float in for 2 landed (one poddy & one bully) and one busted me off! Great fun, watching for the 'mullet swirl' just before they engulf the bread & chuck a wobbly with a water explosion! So much fun on light line. If the water around the bread explodes as they take the bread, it is usually a bream - a small one at that!

Took out my trusty Black Queen & put on some fairly suspect weed (very weak stuff) but the fish loved it! Got 2 undersized ones fairly quickly & had a very nice one bust me off! Next time, I will try for the blackies on the rising tide, between these particular racks (Sean & Sharon know where they are ...) & see how I go, as this was well into the falling tide & I know they are more active there on a rising one. I have caught nice flatties there before also.

After I launched in Little St, I fell victim to fishing the Breck channel on the way (I was supposed to head straight to the racks) and wasted precious 'in tide' time there first! Well, I suppose I didn't really waste time - how can you call any form of fishing 'wasting time!?' Soap & Water!!! I got a good hit on the first drift for blackies & that convinced me to stay there for another 1 1/2hrs .... catching only 2 throwbacks! I could see the big ones, but they just weren't taking. Also, the stink boaters (who wouldn't know 4 knots from 20 knots) were a pain, as I was anchored up & they create huge waves that threaten to swamp yaks like my sik! By then, the tide was turning & heading out!

Heading back to Little St, i came upon some folk that hadn't caught anything, so I gave them the mullet (still alive & kicking) for really fresh bait! The little one would have been good for a livie!

Next time, I will just hightail it to the leases, as per original plan, as the wash boards protect you from the worst of the wash!

Cheerio for now

Hi Charmo

Hope to see you on the water!! Some of the leases you can tie up to the washboards in your boat & toss the float into the lease for the mullet - good luck! Look for the 'shakey' water - or the watertop explosions when birds fly low across it! That is always mullet.

Hi Grant

I must have spent about 6hrs in the Yak last Sun - I know my hip was really sore ... can't imagine why, other than bloody arthritis setting in! It was my paddle yak, not the pedal one so myhip should not have been affected :1badmood: ! I just had so much fun I didn't want to head home! The other half sent a search boat out for me the other week - not this time, tho! :1prop:

Looking forward to getting out again on Sat & Sun pm - high tide in the lake will be about mid afternoon, so from lunchtime on, is looking good!!! I'll hide in the leases away from the stinkboats!! You don't have to paddle far from Little St to get to the leases, either! 5-10min paddle, max!

I can definitely recommend other Raiders trying out a yak for fishing!! A good anchor setup is essential tho!

Cheerio
