Davemmm
Having only a 12' tinney i dont fish outside although from time to time I have headed out on mates boats or a charter. My old man does have a boat that is capable of heading out but a combination of stubbornness for fishing in the same manner he has for sixty years and a weak stomach has meant it hasn't been past the heads. Now though he has decided it's time to venture into deeper pastures. Given that we are both rank amateurs for anywhere other than the estuary I need some advice on where to head and maybe some bait tips. He has a reasonable, but not great, sounder but no GPS. We will be heading out from the Hacking and are really only looking for the basics to start with. Thanks in advance Dave
tumra
mate merries reef is a start... its not too far out from port hacking and its still relatively close to land. When you shot out of the hacking head to the northern side of cronulla beach... can be a bit dangerous though so be careful...

Flightmanager
G'day Dave , We all had to make our first venture into the " Big Water " , even if it was only the North Sea. Firstly , check the BOM and Seabreeze reports before you go out. A big wind , or large seas mean another day in enclosed waters. BUT , if the winds are predicted to be slight , and the swell / waves under 1 metre , you are in with a shot. If at all possible , try to tee up going out with another boat , and dont go out too far on your first attempt. The more you do it , the more you learn , and the further out you will feel comfortable going. There are several reefs and wrecks within a few miles of shore , Im sure other Raiders will point you in the right direction. Ross
