pjbink
is there not a cheaper way out though Spectra rope is made of Dyneema, the same stuff in a lot of gel spun fishing lines - hence its great strength. A cheaper alternative is a winch strap which will cost around $22 - $28. I replaced both my boats winches with Spectra. My small boat had a strap which was OK except you had to check that it wasn't crossed over when connecting up to the boat (a pain when you are retrieving by yourself). Also it wanted to fold over itself when retrieving. The cable has obvious disadvantages: rust, spiking yourself with lose strands, and the biggest one the danger of injury if it breaks and whips back and hits you. I will never get a cable again. The Spectra takes up less diammeter on the winch too which gives you a mechanical advantage of more winching power.
