spongy
Just came back from Jervis Bay. Headed out to Middle Ground at 6am. There were bucket loads of yakkas and slimies just near Murrays boat ramp. Middle ground was like a car park with about 15 other boats out on a superbly calm day. We noticed 2 seals swimming amongst us and thought what a top sight. Not too long after dropping the livies down near the bottom, we are on. As we begin to win the fight, all of a sudden the line changes direction and takes off. The bloody seals have the kingie in its mouth. Ping goes the 30lb braid. What do you do??? Rerigged and shortly after we are on again. This time we lock on the drag and try to haul the kingie in quick smart before the seal gets it. Again the line changes direction and the seal is tossing the kingie in the air and slapping it on the surface of the water. The braid holds this time and we reel in whats left of the kingie. Clean cut at the gills. At least we got out hook back. All in all we landed 4 undersized rats all around 55-60cm and released, and the seals got 3 free meals. Strangely, the live slimies were left untouched and only the 15cm yakkas were preferred. It was such a sight to see the cheeky seals, and really only added to the days experience. A great day out on the water. Sorry no pics as we forgot the camera. Jeff
greenfish
All along the rocks & platforms off the front of JB peninsular there are hundreds of seals sitting, swimming & sunbaking on every flat piece of rock they can find. Last time i was out there you could drive the boat past the rocks right in close & they would just stare at you without any fear at all.By the way it's very hard to get any fish to the boat in that area as well,as we lost about 4 of 5 nice snapper to them as well, when they were on the way up & close to the boat. It get's very frustrating after a while though, even if they are a great sight to see swimming about the place.
