claxton
Raiders I am mad keen to break my Kingy duck and my mate who owns the boat has finally got a weekend free from the so will be out on the harbour on the weekend. I have normally just used standard livie rig with 6kg line on and swapped between livebait and prawns/squid depending on where i'm fishing but i need a kingy! I've read of reports on the site about using braid over mono to about 30lb? Would this make a massiove difference? Can anyone give me some advice on the best line strength, idealrigs to use as will be firmly targetting the kingies on the trip. Am getting tired of catching heaps of small fish. Thanks guys (and girls) Claxton Edited January 13, 2008 by claxton
Hooked-Up
6 kilo is a bit light i think, wait till you see how hard they pull hehe, but you might be right unless you hook a big one, biggest tip i can give is dont fish right on the bottom, if youre in 20 metres bring it off the bottom 4 or 5 metres and drift and burley, works for me, good luck mate
claxton
Cheers fella I had my first taste of how hard they pull last summer when i lost my rod over the side ! I'll definitely up the line strength to about 25lb i reckon. Thanks heaps fpr the tips. we dont have a sounder on the boat so theres a lot of luck and all the advice helps. Fingers crossed Claxton
Hooked-Up
youd be better off upping the line i use 30lb braid but 25lb normal line will be fine, bad luck on losing the rod to the drink thats why i use a baitrunner, good luck mate

How do you rate braid over mono? I've never used it but loads of fishos seem to rate it highly. Claxton

Hooked-Up
no braid for trace mate theyl see it, and if they dont and you do hook up theres more chance of pulling the hooks. its good to have that little bit of stretch at the buisiness end, what sort of reel you putting the braid onto? Hooked-Up
should be ok i think if its 4000 size thats a shimano reel isnt it? id probably spool it up with 20-30lb braidand 50lb leader my mate uses a daiwa 4000 size reel with 20lb braid and goes good
claxton
Aye its a Shimano. its not massively exy but its given me a couple of years good service. cheers for all the tips. this site is brilliant. I'll sort the braid out and hopefully pop my kingy cherry on the weekend!
Piss'n'Broke
Hey mate I wouldnt fish any lighter than 15lb for kingys in the harbour. And this is mono and alot of the time you dont land em on 15lb, but then again some people do .. We have tried 12lb for a lark, and it was exactly that Last year i had 7 bustoffs in one session on 12lb,,, had 2 be the lightest combo out always Go heavy mate, cause when they do take your bait, you wanna know they will be released safe and healthy (perhaps). I gotta get a bigger combo!! Dan D&G
Chris 55
Don't forget if you go to braid to spool up some mono first then double uni to the braid - the mono stops the braid spinning on the reel Chris
claxton
thanks chris i could have imagined hooking into a hood lum to see all the braid heading off to the heads with my kingy still attached! Is it fishing time yet> all thiswork sure gets in the way of it! Claxton
