Position Of Rod Holder

Little Hooker

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Im on the last leg of installing my DR in but all i need to do is drill for holes for the rod holders in the gunnel.

Im not sure what position i should have them face.

1. straight back so the rod goes over the top of the DR???

2. To the side on a sight angle facing back>????

What would work best for this set up???

thanks

Hi Little Hooker I think the best way is to have each downrigger out at an angle and the rod holders in the corner of the gunnels pointing straight out the back. That way you have more margin each way during turns and your hook ups in the sweet spot of the rod as well.

Hi Little Hooker Yes that rod holder position looks pretty good but have the rod facing directly down the gunnels so that the line goes directly out over the stern........ That way you can use another rod holder facing the same way with a cross gimbal mount for your downrigger so that you can turn it to either side and around if you don't have a swivel mount.

By using an inbulit rod holder for your downrigger itself you can use a shorter rod off the stern and a longer rod off the gunnels behind it, fishing both rods straight out the back. That way you can have two rods out the stern on each side, one rod will be higher than the other and you can use the longer rod to cast further out in distance, when you're not using the downrigger/s.

Cheers
