arpie
Hi gusy Managed to get a 'leave pass' to take the yak out whilst Keith entertained our guest! First day that looked like it wouldn't bucket down with rain! Tried my favourite spots for blackies - had a few hit with smaller (just legal) ones, so put them all back & got smoked by a beautie! Just couldn't turn it's head & he got off. Continued to another spot & had a few downs but no hookups. Then went to the main channel as the tide was turning & once again got some throwbacks & dropped a couple of nice ones. I could see plenty of big ones down there tho! Then I got a big down & it took the whole rig, float & all under the washboards ..... oooops!! By the time I retrieved the line by breaking it, I had no rig, no float & no rod tip!! Then the float popped up, so I managed to retrieve that. Then it was 'do I pack it in with no rod tip or do I try & make one?' Who was it that recommended taking a spare rod tip in your tackle?? I grabbed a hook & tried to bend it into a 'tip' shape, but it busted. Tried a different type & managed to do it & tied it on with some fishing line. The tip now looked like a Fly rod Tip! But it worked. Had a few downs with it, but no hookups. Looked at my watch .... I'd been out for 5hrs!! Better get home!! Keith thought I'd got lost! Found a nice lure in amongst the racks - called a Rover75. Anyone used one? Looks like a topwater/walker style. Got rattles up the front & rear. I'll be off the air for 10 days from the end of the week - going to SWR to attempt a beach launch in my kayak along with some other yakking buddies! More likely, I'll hit the river & creeks! Cheerio for now Roberta
jewgaffer
Hi Roberta what to do with all these blackfish breakoffs !! Seems like you've been had by some massive size fish over the years. I don't think I'd be able to suffer too much of that sort of stuff. I know the line has to be fairly light guage to do well, but one would think it would be worthwhile using 20lb braid line throughout, no leader and give them no leaway other than the metre or so in the rod bend. You could just hang them up for a few extra minutes to keep them away from the bottom and the snags while you roll a natures way durry or something. You could just sit back and play bouncing rods with your blackfish until they've had enough of it and stop resisting arrest ay . Make sure your old mates take care up at South West rocks with the kayaks on the beach, don't feel like watching another you tube comedy where the boats finish up up the road in the pie kiosk or something Cheers jewgaffer
arpie
Hi Jewgaffer I use the 20lb braid off the rocks, but use only 6lb braid & a bit of 20lb leader in the lake. My traces are between 6 & 10lb. I really just like the sport of it as much as anything else! Don't want to catch too many (tho I always have a list of folk that are keen to take them!) The big ones have a lot of power in their tails & make every effort to skunk you on the oyster racks or any other structure they can find - not unlike Kingies, really! I'll definitely be carefull at SWR ..... don't want to turn up on UTube or Funniest Home Videos! Cheerio Roberta Forgot to say that I also found 4 squid heads & flaps (separated) on the beach where I launched & landed! What a waste!! The flaps were big enough to be eaten, if not used for bait! They had only kept the tubes. I gathered them all up & now have them in the freezer for bait for SWR. There were about 15 'squid cartilidge' around the site, so someone had surely gotten into them!!
