BarCrusher
For a long time now my fishing goals have been to try and catch a Jewie a Kinggy and a fish on an SP… Well this Sunday was a day that brought a smile on my face that matches and challenges my vary own wedding day… It started at approximately 6am dropped in at Kurnell and slowly made my way over to the workers wharf, burleyed up dropped in a line and enjoyed the surroundings while playing the waiting game… got a couple of reasonable fish but not much happening there… went in to try for some bream and also fished the Barrels, got a couple more but it was shaping up to be a rather quiet day… Decided to go and try one last spot just after high tide and just before I take off to perform my husband duties… Burleyed up dropped in a couple of lines one with cooked prawn and the other with a Hawkesbury… the first line gets a few nudges so keeping my eye on it, a few more yanked it and to no avail… the other rod I’ve got in with cooked prawn appeared to have a little tap (I’m thinking to myself it’s just one of those lovely little red snappers) I lift the rod up and Whoa, Ok this feels like its got some weight behind it, (I don’t think the fish realises its hooked d up yet) I lift give it a little strike and whammo the rod buckles over and ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing my favourite song starts playing… I’m kinda crapping myself at this point because I’m in a 13ft tinny to which I can barely stand in, using a little 6-8 pound rod with, 8 pound line and this thing is just screaming zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... thoughts are rushing through my head, did I tie those knots right, am I going to get spooled here and the Fish is still screaming away… Ok mate this feels like your first ever kinggy and all the odds are against you, but with a little bit of patience, skill and the mercy of God... there’s a chance you get bring this in… So I compose myself get into the a good position doing the balancing act and wait for this powerful specimen to stop running… when it eventually decides to take a breather I slowly begin lifting up on the rod ever so delicately and winding 2-3 winds at time after doing that for a minute or so and still not seeing any colour, the Animal decides it has got a lot more left in it ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz its off again all that effort was just crushed, again I await till it to stops again start bringing it in… this continues for another 5 or so mins… Eventually after a patient yet tiresome battle I begin to see some colour and Wooooo Hooooo!!!!! It’s a Kinngy and a pretty decent one for that matter, my eyes lit up my & heart starts racing, he see’s the boat and dives off for a little run taking me under the boat , Im now hanging over the tinny with half my rod buckled over in the water and have come to realisation that I that not only have I hooked up to my first King Fish but I now can also loose my first King Fish. He starts to tire up and I am bringing him closer to the surface, my mate standing with the net ready... I was so amazed atthe shear brute force and power of this creation I bring him to the boat and my mate has a panicked attempt at netting him and misses, he certainly didn't like that and takes me under the boat… I tell my mate to prepare himself and to take it easy I slowly bring him up again having a couple more winds and letting the rod do all the work, I direct him to the net and whoosh he’s netted and into the Boat… Yeeee HAAA!!!! Woohoo CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES C'MOn I finally have landed my first Kinggy and it will be a day that I will never forget… PS. I latter that day also caught my first fish on an SP…. Blessed by God Indeed - What a Day... Bring on the Jewie!! BarCrusher (Maybe some Day)
King slayer
Mate my heart was racing just reading that one. What a battle! It was an un-expected hook up like that (and a very abrupt bust off) at the wedding cake which promted me to up the size of my gear substantially so I could land 'em. You've done well.
