Self-draining Deck And Deck Wash

Self draining deck means that any water that comes in the boat drains out scuppers ( holes in back of boat). It means the boats deck is sealed around the edges where it meets the hull and the deck is above the waterline so the water that gets in is able to drain. Generally only avaliable in meduim size boats as on smaller lighter craft it puts the centre of gravity too high and they become unstable. The sealed compartment it creates in the bilge is often filled with extra buoyancy as a safety measure for offshore fishing where you get a lot of water over the bow and sides on the runs in and out or when reversing.

Many of the newer boats are not self draining but are sealed decks . This means that the deck is simply below the waterline and doesn't self drain but it can still be drained with bilge style pumps. This is used in smaller vessels to keep the centre of gravity lower in the boat to make them more stable. It is an OK compromise as long as the owner is aware that they must have large working pumps if they intend in going out in conditions where water can come into the boat.

Deck wash is a salt water pump conected to your battery, hose and a trigger spray just like your garden hose at home and us used to wash down your deck of all the blood and guts from fishing or your mates who can't rinse their feet after being on the mud bank. Many are pathetic and should be called deck showers so if you get one make sure it is a brand name salt water with high pressure and volume one with auto cut out pressure switch.

If set up right with on board fresh water tanks you can use it to wash down boat and trailer etc.
