Fished most days the last week from broken bay, and i have to say its been lousy. >From the southery winds, to shitty lumpy wind chopped water, tiny kings, to top it off no dollies at the fads (on the days im there) .

My fishing trip today was cut short, only the second windless morning in weeks, with little sea, and a day that was looking promising. In almost darkness on route to a wreck in broken bay to gather livies, about 50m short the engine on my Allison suddenly lost power, began to missfire then when i backed off it died. My deakie quickly reach with a gaff and grabed the bouy on the mark, just as we drifted past it. Got it to start easy enough choked to the brim but wouldn`t idle and was a pain to get into gear. We limped to the beach on Lion Is ( yes i know, not supposed to land) as i wanted to check the plugs and leads. All ok there so off we limped on what felt like 3 cylinders! Felt like i only had a 70 on the back.

Made it back to the ramp and made a few calls, all the local ones were booked out, so took it too a marine mech mate out my way who squezed it in round 1pm. Its now 6.40pm and i have just returned from collecting her. Hows that for service?

Anyway it ended up being a broken reed valve. I`m told its caused by reving the engine to max revs which i do often and for long periods. A small metal piece about the size of a 5c coin hopefully made it out the exaust...

Engine had just only clicked 700hrs. - 2000mod merc 115hp 2 stroke

Cost was $395.00

I`ll be back up the coast thursday night, ready for another couple hard days fishing

Hi Dan

I'm with you on the wind killing fishing plans. I had set a week aside but only got out twice in Broken Bay and poor results, not uncommon for me.

There some mighty big hour you have put on a 4-year motor, so I assume your out a lot and do a reasonable amount of trolling.

Good luck with the rest of your fishing and hope the weather is kind to you.

Cheers guys. Y

es i do spent alot of time trolling , but even when spinning or squid gathering i have the engine ticking over. It all adds up.

In the future i will be up grading to a new motor, with better fuel economy and more poke. thinking of a 150 direct injection evinrude/johnson, very light at 173kg only 20kg more than my 115 merc.

ouch mate,

not a good start to the day.

where abouts have u been gettin livies?

its been hard to get any lately, but i dont really know the spots.

slow trolling slimies past the fad(s) apparently has been working on the dollies

i dropped an 8kg + bull on the weekend on a xmas tree about 5 miles past the fad.

they are a bit ficcle at the moment.

hope the engine is ok now

Yakkas are in all the usual spots and I have been getting slimies too in some places, the key is to berley hard and to drift over likely areas, once you run into the slimies, drop anchor and go for your life.

Good to hear that about the fads, I plan on doing that tomorrow or saturday.
