Outboard Issue

Hi guys,

finally gave the outboard a proper run that i got for my project boat.

ran it before no dramas but i didnt have any throttle cables.

i ran it today with the throttle cables. banged into fwd and reverse and ran with no issues.

however i walked out the back about 30mins and was confronted with this.

im pretty lost when it comes to this sort of thing so any help would be great.

the outboard was apparently serviced before i picked it up.

Hi Col, that is excess engine oil. If your engine is oil injected make sure it is not sucking air and causing on over oiling situation. Also if the enigne is either pre-mix or oil injected make sure you are using good quality oil. If pre-mix make sure it is 50:1, I would not mind betting that it is a richer mix and if you ran for 1/2 hour I am glad I am not your neighbour and really you do not need to run for that long on the flusher.

Also make sure the thermostat is in the engine and operating correctly because if the engine runs cold at low speed you will also see this.

Check out the above things, use good oil at least XD-50, and give it a good hard run in the water and the excessive oil will be gone.

Cheers,

Huey.

Huey,

thanks for that mate.

ran it for approx 8 mins on the muffs there was no sign of the oil leak until the engine had stopped and i came back 30mins after it had finished running and i found the leak.

motor used to be oil inject but they have disabled it and changed to premix by the look of it.

i just ran premix into it when i have run it. and made it at 50:1

strange that it did not show the first time i ran it?

how would i check the thermostat?

thanks for the help mate much appreciated.

just had a look at the lower gearcase oil and its as yellow as yellow can be so i guess its not the prop seal?

in saying that though it hasnt been run in salt since the service they did before i picked it up. it would be black in there too though wouldnt it if that was the issue?

when i did run it for a little while in idle and i was mucking around with the cold idle would that cause the excess build up?

If the gear oil is pee green/yellow its probably brand new Johnson HIViz gear oil...a good sign that the motor was serviced before you got it. Seal failure will give you a nice creamy coffee colour.

To check your thermostat the head around the stat should be nice and warm to the touch. If its warm but you can leave your hand on it forever the stat may be stuck open and its running cold. If you can't touch it its running to hot! Best check is to pop it out and and drop in a pan of water and bring to the boil. You'll see it open and close.

The black leakage most likely burnt oil and fuel particulary if the motor has been stood a little while. It will be running rich at idle being premix anyway. As Huey said a good run will deal with that. When your ready 4000rpm out to Box and back..that sorts it!

Drop me a PM if you want me to have a look.

Cheers

Good Morning Col, as mentioned what you are seeing is excess engine oil because of bad quality oil, too much oil or the engine running cold. The first two are easy fix, but check and make sure the engine is ruinning hot at idle. Depending on the age of the outboard the thermostat is at the top of the cyliner head and not that hard to cover the cover and inspect. If it does have one test and make sure it opens in boiling water, if the thermostat is not there, which would not surprise me, install one and as mentioned go for a hard run on the water.

Cheers,

Huey.
