josh_fisho
hey guys, i'd just quickly like to know is it ok to give your threadline reels a fresh water rinse out after recieving a bit of salt water???... and a bit of sand....? cheers, josh
roosterman
hi josh, the enemy of the beach fisho is your rod hitting the deck an sand getting in reel.... if it was me i would at the least take cover off the reel, this usually means taking spool and a few other bits etc off.. use a clean bench and lay pieces out as you go.... clean an flush out real and lube gears/pins and any bits you think need lube.... check drag washers and give them a polish on some very fine wet n dry sandpaper.... put all back together then say 100 times "i will not lay my rod down on the sand again" only joking... if you got a diagram of the real it may help but just be careful as some reels have little springs that tend to go ping and dissapear into the either so to speak. usually just as you say "is that a spriiiiiiing.....DOH" hope this helps...... big reason why the old alvey cannot be beat for fishing the sand...... cheers.... steve..... roosterman
i see now... yeh i think def a wash out in fresh would be good... i am a bit hesitant using wd/inox as i dont think its good on line if not careful.. in saying that i have been lazy at times an instead of pull apart a good flush and spray with wd using the nozzle to get right inside... usually an issue with my cheaper ones as my good gear gets the royal treatment.... cannot beat pulling 1 nut etc pull both sides apart and flush the ol alvey way..... cheers... steve..... huntman
we always wash down our reels with fresh water. I hear warm soapy water works ok too, but we just use fresh water from the tap.

slinkymalinky
Hey Josh, I rinse my gear in fresh water every time I go out. I know a lot of Raiders who take their outfits into the shower with them after a day on the water (personally, I'm not that desperate for company!!). A couple of things I'd recommend though is not to blast your reel with fresh water under high pressure (eg. like a flat out garden hose) because it can actually push salt, debris and dirt into your reel; and before you rinse your reels do the drag right up tight (then let it off again after you've shaken the water off your reel). This will help prevent water entering your drag while you're rinsing it. Before I put my reels away, I do give them a light spray and a wipe over with Lanox or Innox to protect them. I've been assured many times it doesn't damage the line and while I don't really know for certain, I've been looking after my reels that way for 10 years with no ill effects. Cheers, Slinky

roosterman
hi slinky, the way you described your end of trip ritual is spot on. tighten drags then lightly spray wash with fresh then dry and loosen drag all the way.. the lube spays etc are one of those things im in 2 minds with,if kept off the line its gotta be the go but i worry about compromising the line sometimes... as for the showering with the gear,my already thinks i spend toooooo much time instead of with her so getting caught in the shower ..... my earlier suggestions were for the extras needed other than the standard washdown... looks like josh has decided whats needed anyway but good for others to learn how to look after their gear also.... cheers... steve...
