humesy
Hit the water this arvo, keen as mustard. Marked the kiddies homework in record time (top marks all round)and hit the ramp at 5.15. Plan was to get yakkas at balmoral and chase kings until sundown then chase a jewie. A stiff NE saw my anchor dragging and made the balmoral option impossible. Headed over towards Quarrantine to hide from the wind and see if squidding might be and option. Shortly after arriving, I saw kings go under the boat in about 3m of water. Rushed like a madman to rig up a lure but never saw them again. Got very frustated with the local yakkas who turned up in a swarm but wouldn't swallow a hook. Also dropped a couple of squid. The there suddenly little garfish busting up the surface. Had to be kings underneath but they didn't seem interested in my new popper. Chucked in the towel on plan A and settled for a quick dinner while enjoying a cracker sunset. Headed to the spit for squid and only managed two in an hour and a half (one junior one at that). Picked up a couple of tailor and a yakka and gave myself 2hrs to catch a jew in a favourite old spot. Didn't take that long at all. The bigger of the two squid (rigged live) took a couple of hard hits and came up deceased but whole. Must have been jewie. Then my speculator rod went off. I often chuck an unweighted pillie out the back to pick up stray squid or tailor. This fish took a few good runs and headshakes which meant only one thing: jewie. Measured 82cm and the ganged hooks were well down his throat. Tore the head off the dead squid and put it out. While i cleaned the jew, the head went for a short spurt on a heavy rod. didn't feel much weight as this little jewie was only 50cm and unfortunately deep hooked and showing signs of barotrauma. Good nights fishing. Plan B was very successful and I have saved myself a trip to the fishmarket to cater for my friends coming for a bbq on sunday. Interesting the types of bites and hookups tonight. Worth discussing on the other recent chat forums. Will add contributions when I have caught up on sleep. Cheers. That's an excellent report Andrew quite humourous actually and very, very enjoyable, quite interesting a little funny and very well written mate. Andrew I think it's really great you caught a couple more jewfish in your favourite spot again, but maybe a longer anchor chain ay. Oh about the kids getting top marks all round for their homework, is it alright if I send a couple of third generation jewgaffer offsprings over to your private school, there not quite cretin like and they'll arrive without any fishing tackle of course. By the way is a cracker sunset some sort of an ice cream when your fishiing for marauding Sydney harbour night jew? Just give me a call the next time your pupils get quickly rechecked top marks and it's off to Roseville we go in the Savage Cheers jewgaffer
humesy
Hi Byron, Had a good session last night. I had a spot reserved for a teaching mate who has had a rough trot lately. He didn't end up coming though. I think this coming week will fish well. The larger jew nailed the pillie while the larger squid was dropped without a hook up. I should attach a stinger next time as I was using just a single 8/0 through the top of the hood. The fish must have dropped it straight away as there was no drag taken. The bites felt more like tailor and I was expecting to find 1/2 a squid leftover. Perhaps it was a small jew that tried to engulf the squid and knew that it didn't feel right when it felt pressure. The smaller jew wasn't so fussy and wolfed the head right down. I cast my vote for fishing in gear! Would love to fish out of your boat and I still need to return your torch so give me a holler. Cheers Edited March 15, 2008 by humesy
