Down Rigger

Hi guys just wondering ,where is the to best place to mount a downrigger on a boat? Do you have to mount them on the back or can you also mount them on the side of the boat.

****** Also can you raiders be kind enough and explain stepby step how to use a down rigger as this is new to me.
