sydfisher Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Went out to the bay yesterday arvo around 3 30pm with the frozen southern squid out the front of Molineaux.Conditions were pretty ordinary with plenty of nor easter wind swell making things rough.Dead low tide.Again, big bait schools on the sounder.Dropped the heads down.Half hour later the overhead with 20kg line gets a take.Just coudnt keep its head away from what seems like reef.Thirty seconds of pounding to be busted off with ease.Trace and all.The harder i pull, the harder they pull.Whats the go with that? On the sounder it shows a flat bottom over where im fishing with bait schools constantly moving through.I drop my baits straight down, out the back of the boat. When i fight them, they always bust me off right under the boat on something.Ive seen videos of anglers fighting local kings with ease. Not the bloody ones im hooking at Molineaux. They go hard from the start.Gave it another hour with nothing and headed back in.Has anyone had the same experience there? Thanks.
King slayer Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Mate, They're probably busting you off on the hull, you might need a longer rod or just concentrate on not letting the line any where near anything. A lot of people say these kings know just what to do when they get hooked, they wrap your line around the nearest structure and fight like hell. That's why they're 'King fish' I guess. Even the little ones fight like mongrels. So much fun eh!! Still, well done getting into them, it sounds like you have a good spot now for next time.
kingfishercam Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 good on you for persisting There is as well as fished this spot regulary , i have also dived there and there are literally HUNDREDS of anchors snagged in the wall blocks and further off the wall aswell amongst the odd shopping trolley ive strangely seen there,Mate there is plenty these dogs can snag you around and break you off on, just keep persiting ,you will win some and lose some.cheers.cam.

Thanks. G-day i usually fish 15lb with a 60lb leader with good knots & strong hooks. I really stick it to them right from the start & generally boat them within 5 min. With that said i had an experience 2 months ago that surprised me how big some of the fish frequenting the bay are. I was skipping a couple of yakkas under the little light house on sydney side of the bay,One on 15lb & the other on 25lb. Of course it was the 15 that got smashed,I am used to dealing with 800-900mm kings quite regulary. However this fish was huge it went straight down low & i could hardly hang on to the rod let alone get any line back, I would struggle to get two turns of the reel on & it would take them back with ease. I didnt take my equaliser set as i was only chasing bay kings,I was really regretting my decision to leave it at home.Any one who knows the spot knows how fast the tide pushs out there but this fish was holding & pulling my boat around (510 profish). I did battle for an hour & twenty minutes & was just starting to get the upper hand when my line snapped, Probbably due to the lack of smoothness in my fatigued arms. I couldnt believe how long i did battle for without getting to see the fish. I just drove the boat for the next two hours with my mate doing the fishing,I was too buggered to hold the rod, I will get that fish another day & i will be better prepared for him.
sydfisher Posted March 21, 2008 Author Posted March 21, 2008 Yeah, gidday slayer,i try to keep a close eye on where the line is when hooked up,and try to make sure it clears any problems around the boat.Im just out the front. anchored around 50ft out from the wall on the eastern side.Im just starting with anchoring and fishing for them till i get up some experience on what they can do.As long as there are bait schools it seems like this spot is ok to have a go at them.Ive put in about 4 hours there for 2 bust offs and one landed.Gidday Cam,well that explains that.No wonder they like it there. How far out does it get less snaggy? Hey pluggers, thats pretty heavy duty fishin mate.Gees it must of been a monster king.Yeah, your arms and shoulders wouldve been gone after that.I know now that i dont like overhead reels for sure. Its hard enough fighting a decent fish ,without having to deal with the roll from side to side of the rod while trying to get line on the fish.Threadline reels are easier to use without having to worry about the bloody overhead rolling in my hands.Thats the reason why i lost the fish.Too much rolling. Its fine when i troll with it for other fish, but not for kings. Will post next attempt at them shortly. Thanks fellas.
