rsvnige Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Hi you blokes , I just moved here from the UK and need to get my boat license. Any recommendations as to where to go to get it. Is it necessary to go on a one day course such as here.?? http://www.abcboating.com/ I'm getting a BRIG 645 with a 150 Mercury on it. Anyone had any experience of these..any good.? Cheers fellas.
Flightmanager Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 to Fishraider , I would highly recommend doing a structured course such as the one you posted. Probably the best way for someone totally new to our waterways to get the knowledge they require ! Good luck . Ross
glennmreid Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 to Fishraider. I would recommend a course with any good boating school. The information that you will learn is so valuable.

Just trying to find a cheap way to get the license as the boat is costing me a bloody fortune of course.!!! However I do take on board..(if you forgive the pun)..that as a newbie from the UK I could do with a bit of practical tuition too.

Reckon I'll do a full day course to get my license , then just get the missus to take the test to get hers.
1975 Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 i just got mine as well and as mick said it was quite easy to do and no need for the course, just do the online quiz over a week and as you get a question wrong do the review to study. the questions on the quiz are EXACTLY the same as the test. save yourself some $$$$$$. Good luck Billy ps if i can get it first time with no prior knowledge of boats or boating, i reckon most people can. also don't forget the compulsory safety course ( $10 DVD or online)
donjuarez Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 welcome to oz! I got mine about 3 months ago... at ABC Had no previous boating experience though... The one day course is about 3/4 hours of learning plus the test. Then we broke for lunch.. Then met the instructor down at the ramp for laucnh/retrieve and a bit of a drive of his 6m Quintrex. Even got to see some kings bust up the surface in Middle Harbour I'd recommend the course if you're new to boating... alot of the rules on the water are an international standard...
tuffy Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 G'day RSVNIGE and welcome to the wide brown land. As others have said, it is appropriate that you get your license with instruction .Also, I live at Putney and am quite happy to spend some time on the water with you to familiarise you with Oz boating and water conditions. Have been a boatie for a lot of years and am quite happy to share any knowledge with you just to make sure you are up to speed with local conditions / safety angles etc. PM me if interested or call 0402 110 666. Cheers Russ

Cheers Russ Wow what a friendly bunch you lot are. Russ I'd be happy to take you up on the offer at some point. I'll generally be launching from under Roseville bridge so I think not too far from you. When I finally get the boat on the water I'll give you a shout. Of course the one I was after was sold at the weekend before I could get my hands on it. cheers mate Nige
rsvnige Posted March 29, 2008 Author Posted March 29, 2008 So guys did the ABC course today and got my license 1st go...actually scored 100% on the test so well happy with that .The afternoon spent on Pittwater was very helpfull and made a lot of the theory make sense. Good fun dodging the sail boats and a bit of an eye opener as to the number of people out there completely ignoring all the rules. Don't want to preach, as obviously i'm a total newbie, but is this normal.??? Boat coming next week hopefully so off to buy all the bits ...and a towbar.!! Thanks for all your help. Any good sources for 2nd hand lifejackets.....seems I've suddenly got loads of mates who want to come out to play.!!!
pelican Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 You poms never learn . I'll type slowly so you can understand my accent. Its Australia - your bloody mates can supply their own beer bait and life jackets if they are going to bludge on you for your boat. As for rules - what rules - we are all bloody convicts!!! Whenever we see the the ABC boat out we treat it like a L plate driver and aim for it as it is good experience and that way they get your moneys worth and a thrill for the day. Truthfully half the folks don't understand the rules and the most important one is avoid a collision no matter what and buy a bloody good airhorn to wake the sleepy mongrels up. Congratulations now you have your lic you have the right to act like everyone else and ignore basic courtesty , common sense and maritime rules. All jokes aside - buy good life jackets and make sure you have properly fitting kids ones if kids are on board. You spoke of skiing so buy quality items and talk with the site sponsers as they ski. Each boat has a capacity plate which will show the maximum weight / number of people allowed on board in sheltered waters so you won't need more jackets than that. Good luck and hope you find a boat.
