Josh88
At the ramp at 6 and straight off to middle head in search of squid, it poured just about the whole way, and we looked quite pathetic 3 of us sitting under a small umbrella in the to try and catch squid. Once again we failed to do this as we have in the past 3 outings in the new boat. (no idea what the problem is, never had this trouble before! Can anyone help me!!!) Luckily we found a patch of baby yakkas around manly and got 15+ of them (not before getting twice as many small leatherjackets, Any tips for avoiding them?) So we went and fished a normally producing spot for a number of species to not even get a hit from a king and only catch an undersize trevally, couple of flounder and too many small snapper. The guys in a small tinny next to us got smoked once and landed another king but we didnt have a touch on the live or dead yakkas. Tried around Watsons, and a couple of spots up Middle Harbour for not much, so released the remaining live yakkas and went home! Niko
Josh....... I've heard there a boats out there that simply don't catch fish. If it is only your third time out sure you don't have one??? No bananas on the boat? Short of that what can you bloody do other than keep a diary and compare notes from similar conditions. I find rain significantly affects fishing as some species react differently to this, particularly those who are near the surface. Good luck next time

Floating_Medic
Mate i can fully empathise with you! Ive been out fishing about 10 trips over the last month or 2, and ive bought home 5 just legal trevally in that time. Oh, and one 55cm Jewfish. I fished botany bay for nearly 24 hours over the last 4 days with nothing. I can catch yakkas, octopus, shovel nose pains in the arse and small snapper and tailor. But can i catch a fish worth bringing home? or even a cold for that matter?? NO, i cant. God knows what im doing wrong??
fisherdad
Dont worry we also own one of those boats that dont catch manyfish. When a Hammerhead circles the livey and another boat with 100 ft hooks up on a Marlin the fish are there. I just need then to understand MY BOAT Stupid fish

Cheers Josh Josh for starters i reckon the squid around the usual spots (spit bridge ect ) have gone off (bigtime), this time last year i was alone pulling minimum 12 every outing , im not sure why its so hard now, wether its (fished out) from all the boats that gather there now , or all the rain we have had over the last few months has put them off , who knows (maybe the bomb steve dropped might have killed em all ) lol (What do other raiders think) You can get nice big southern calamari around the rocky shore over near balmoral near were the yakas are, though it can get pretty rough and very snagy and you may lose a few jigs. As for the kings i have been getting a couple or more most outings , but nothing like this time last year ,they have been a lot harder as well, why im not sure. Im sure other raiders may have been cleaning up. (maybe them raiders can inlighten us) anyway mate keep going at it as you will only get better cheers Guy
Josh88
Thanks a lot for the replies guys. Good to know i'm not the only one struggling, i think you have the right idea brickman, chasing the bonnies with the chance of kings. Being saturated in water for the first hour we were out didnt help and as mentioned probably affected the fishing to some extent. Hopefully i'll be able to break the drought next time we go out. Mainly hoping to get something on my unchristened Daiwa gear and get used to fighting stuff on it before i go back chasing GT's in north QLD for when another 50lber appears. O well. Cheers guys Josh
gretsch
You need to get in the zone. Are you letting your jigs sink? Did you get any snags? If you didn't get a snag, you are not in the zone. The Cephalopods hang very deep. Try moving around also. We don't give a spot more than 20 minutes. If you don't get one within that time, they are not there. Move on. Sometimes, a move of 20-30 mteres is enough to find a patch! Thanks Ceph, We are definitely in the zone as we (my brother and step dad) have gone through about $60 in squid jigs in the last 3 outings, seeing the yo-zuri/yamashita/daiwa jigs are $20 each. What size do you think works best, we have mainly been using 2.5 but 1.8 as well, we're finding the 1.8 takes forever to sink, and probably isn't getting in the zone, but we have not even seen a follow from a squid which is what's worrying me. And each spot we have moved probably 20-30m after 10-15min of nothing, and then onto another location. Some days we have tried up to 7 or 8 locations (including small moves in between) for not even a single follow let alone a patch, i won't be back out for a few weeks so hopefully we'll do better the next time we are out. sydharbourfisho
Hey Josh have you tried using some egimax on the jigs? Everytime I re apply I seem to get hits and even hookups on the squid. its a great little tool to have with you whilst fishing and the money spent on the spray is well worth it as it can sometimes have u there fishing for squid for not long at all when you will realise that you have many squid on your livey tank ready for that days fishing.. good luck sean
