Jatman
headed out with a couple of mates to west reef over the weekend, and scored a couple of nice bonito both around the 75cm, taking our kingie baits. Ended up with 2 bonito and 1 legal king 68cm out of 4 rats. what suprised me was the amount of reddies around the 40cm mark nice little day in broken bay considering the nor easter. the reddies were all caught on occy legs which were caught at the reef, whilst the bonitos and kings all took favour to our selection of butterflied slimies. Guest Big-Banana
Sounds like a good day mate . Snapper are here which is promising. Dont worry about the NE let it come! All that warm water is on its way.
Guest Jocool
I wouldn't call myself a big girl - 27425 If you won't I'm sure someone else will. I always thought the best way to despatch an occy was bash it on the head!

Ken A
Good report Jatman. Seems like the Bonito are showing up all over. That will certainly make for more interesting outings for some Your a big girl Pedro A knife between the eyes takes care of an occy. So does turning them inside out. Skin the tentacles & they make a nice bait. I prefer squid myself but occy is OK.
mark_s
Good effort Jatman. I haven't seen your posts before - so -   to the site. Occy legs eh. How do you convert them from ugly looking critters at the side of the boat into a dead occy?? I wouldn't call myself a big girl - but I don't like handling the buggers   27425 Saw a TV show where an old Greek guy in Port Stephens used to bite their brains out to kill occy's. Was an interesting sight as the Occy was trying to bite him at the same time. Personally I combine Jocool and Ken's approaches. A "calmer" between the eyes first followed by a knife. Usually a small stab will do it. They are smart buggers though if left alive - will escape from most things including closed eskies if given the chance. Martin
Hi Jatman Thanks for the report. Sounds as though a few of us should head out as the Hawkesbury seems to be tough going for most. The wind is a real bugger in taking the edge off your day. How did you come up with Jatman? Cheers Martin
Bashir
I flip their heads inside out to kill them. With a bit of practice you can do it pretty quickly. Just watch out they don't bite you, they can take a nice chunk of flesh off your hand.
Outnumbered
i second flipping the heads inside out. on large ones i slide my hand up inside and just turn them, and use 2 fingers on the small ones.
Bashir
yeh they do pedro, but once you reveal their brains for all the world to see they kind of stop doing that.

wombat
I was out on the water last Saturday night and standing on the transom ... err watering the garden when this occy was seen doing a breast stroke to my left going under the yammy. Almost baptised him but got the net and swished him up instead. Handed him to No2. son until he starts to morph and sweeze through the 3/4 inch net. How a 3inch head could do that just amazes me. Let him go after realising that no one was going to get anywhere near him. Three lads in the boat and no takers. Next time we gotta bring mum. Jatman
we turned the occy inside out i think its much more of a human way. the legs do grab on to your arms though which i dont enjoy to much. i m really not that new to the forum though im probably what you would call a phantom raider. i ve been a member of fishraider since the old site. Dorado 2
Yep same here, don't like them tentacles on my arms at all!! So the poor thing gets a few jabs in the head before I flip the head in record time. I have never caught anything with them though. I much prefer squid to eat and fish. Going down Porthacking tomorrow will take some pics if we catch something thats if I can find my sons digital. Cheers
bung
I've heard stories of Gregg trying to put a couple of hooks into a live one while 8 arms are slithering all over his arm. dunno if he caught any tho
