yting
Went out Wed night and again Fri night in search of that ever elusive first Mulloway. Tried the usual gutters along Wanda on a rising tide for a regulation coulpe of Tailor. Cut them up and used them as fresh bait but not even sniff of a Jew. I'm up over 120 odd hrs now without so much as a single run. This hidden jewel is wearing me down as the nights are getting colder. My confidence and respect for these demons of the deep is at and all time low. For some reason I'm having trouble catching my squid now too. Is anyone else struggling with them? Nathan. I struggle like you wouldn't believe. I don't think there are any of these fish left...

jewgaffer
Hi Nats. I wouldn't give up on catching good size jewfish off the beach. Keep on trying especially at Wanda. It is a very popular jewfish spot and many good size fish have been caught there over the years. As Swordfisherman said the next few months is the best time of the year for fishing for jewfish. As well as mentioning the advantage of fishing on dark nights and using a larger slab of fresh fish bait, Stewy has given excellent advice on jewfish feeding times. In fact, being assured of the best time frame to specifically target jewfish off the beach, encourages the recognition of what hours to start and what time to finish a session and then sticking to it as other rubbish generally come on when the bite goes off towards the mid part of the run out. Controlled fishing hours and more chance of a good result will hold the interest of the fisherman. Consistent timing and getting a result will make the next session more deliberate and positive, and challenges the fisherman to persevere harder to do well knowing the opportunity for having a good result is within that time frame. Fishing shorter sessions over a couple of hours each side of the top of the tide and doing it regularly will eventually produce. When the high tide is in the evening, a result encourages other sessions for convenience around the same time. I believe going at night continually and only during the times Stewy mentioned is smart fishing, and produces the best results overall off the beach. Good timing makes fishing for jewfish less time consuming and more rewarding in the long run. Cheers jewgaffer

Cheers jewgaffer Thanks for that jewgaffer, I have been fishing those exact times regulary but am having trouble getting the right weather conditions to suit. Like for example, I'm off down there again tonight but as a general rule the southerly will come up making it had to fish. I guess I just keep trying for that perfect night when it all comes together and the fish play the game as well. Nath
