My 7yr Old Daughters Best Capture!

Fishing on botany bay early saturday morning with my 7 year old daughter Angelique, produced a nice variety of fish all caught on ultra light tackle with a collection of fresh peeled prawns & live nippers.

With a steady trail of fine berley along with the runout tide,we soon enough had the bites coming pretty

regularly with some nice bream hitting the baits hard, along with a few whiting & the odd trevally, all giving

Angelique a pretty hectic workout & heaps of fun,on light 2lb mono line, lightly weighted with a metre long

4lb leader & number 2 size mustad suicide hooks on all 4 outfits we had set out.

I had the fun job of rigging, baiting up,casting out & unhooking the fish, while Angelique done all the work

grabbing rods, hooking up & very slowly taking her time to wind in each fish we hooked.

Around 8.30 after the bite had began to slow down, so i made a move to slightly deeper water in

the middle of the bay, wide of the 3rd runway.

After setting anchor & having set out the spread of rods,i turned my back to grab the cold water for a drink

& i heard for the 20th time, quote"dad i think that something is pulling on that rod" so thinking that it was

probably the current or wave action pulling the rod tip,i got a big suprise when i turned around to see the

rod tip right down & doubled over hard, this time she was spot on,a fish had nailed the bait & the line had

run around to the other side of the boat.

The rod was picked up & with a very solid weight on the end,i told her to wind in steadily but when the fish pulls, stop winding & let it go.I new this wasn't a bream as it was not running too hard but just a solid &

stubborn weight, that had Angelique puffing & struggling after about 15min on the rod.

As it got closer to the boat & i could see the double knot come over the back near the outboard,i started to

get a bit worried as this fine line was getting too close to both the outboard & the boat, but when i grabbed

the leader & guided the line around to the side of the boat,i looked over the side & the big brown shape

of a solid flathead came to the surface,i couldnt believe the size of the fish she just managed to bring to

the boat,i scrambled quickly for the net & after some very anxious moments, finally slid its big head into

it & lifted the fish aboard.I couldnt believe she done it,a great fish that went 64cm & 1.93kg on the scale,

caught on 2lb mono line.Angelique was gone, here arms were aching & she had enough for the day after

that, but she was heaps happy with the big flathead & couldnt stop admiring it at the back of the boat.

With 8 bream,3 whiting,2 trevally & the flathead,along with a few bust offs & chopped by 2 big tailor,we

called it a day around 12.30pm & headed back in.

We had a great time together on the bay with a good bag of quality fish,i was very proud of her efforts &

thought she was brave to get out there on the water so early, with the mornings starting to get pretty

fresh this time of year, but she was still keen to get back out there the next day with the promise of

maybe getting amongst some striped tuna & frigate mackerel that had shown up very close in along the coastline over the last few days.

Will give you that report soon,on another great day out there for Angelique.

Thanks

Steve

Angelique, you are a champion! It only took me 45 years to get a flathead like that!

And you Steve must be one proud dad!

Well done to both of you. This was a great report to read. Thanks. Looking forward to the next one.

Cheers

Peter

top stuff nexus, i heard you guys over the radio on the sunday chatting to a mate... you were about 12km off botany and were heading into maroubra for a bash as far as i can remember

well done to your daughter on her catch

p.s. nice looking boat, what is it?

Hi crazyfisherdude

The boat goes great & suits all types of fishing we choose to do on the day from estuary,to close offshore,

to wide out near browns, can handle it on my own if i need to at the ramp & light enough to tow up or

down the coast fishing the hot spots when the fish are there.

Its a 5.5metre aluminium Stessl bluewater,with a 115hp suzuki 4stroke to push her along,very economical on

fuel, its definately the best boat i have owned, very comfortable & roomy to fish from, plus heaps stable on

the water in all conditions.

That was probably someone calling me over the radio on the weekend,i was trolling up & down the coastline

off malaber & maroubra getting my daughter amongst the schools of striped tuna & frigate macks that

showed up close in,only 100m out from the rocks at some places.

Cheers buddy

Steve
